You have a good memory because that is exactly what happened in the fight, Weaver took over in 10-13 as Coetzee was tiring. Coetzee definetly took many of the early rounds as he was very aggressive hitting Weaver repeatedly with powerful combintations, but it was this aggression that burnt him out. If this fight happened now a days, the referee may of stopped the fight in the 8th in Gerrie's favour.

As for your last question, if it was a 12 round fight I feel it would of been regarded as a robbery, Weaver only started comming on as Coetzee tired later on in the fight.

Thinking about the fight, I put this right up there with Holyfield-Dokes as the best HW fight of the 80's

I agree Coetzee. Coetzee would have been better off as a 12 round fighter. Does anyone else think Coetzee was robbed vs Snipes?

All of the world. It was voted robbery of the year, a disgusting decision.

Not to blow smoke up his backside or anything, but I read an article around this period (it may have been a year or two later) that called Coetzee the finest 8 round heavyweight in the world.
Not that it counts for anything, but it's quite an interesting statement nonetheless.

He wouldn't have beaten Holmes over 8 and Page actually did starch him in that time frame. Pretty sure Tate was beating him handily too at that point. Their point is good however - over 8 rounds Gerrie was indeed a very effective fighter.

Larry Tate was Darrin Stevens boss on the old "Bewitched" show.

Pretty funny though. You been drinking?

Coetzee tired in the second half of the bout and he let Snipes fight his way back onto the scorecards. Not that Snipes accomplished much, but there was so much sloppy, fatigued, free-swinging from both guys in the later rounds that it's easy to see how the judges' could have given Snipes four or five rounds.

Coetzee probably should have been given the decision, but the verdict for Snipes was nowhere as outrageous as people like to claim.

I dont understand that reasoning that says judges ought to "find a winner" in every round. If the round is honestly even then it should be scored even.
I often see rounds that are dead even, and they are more often than not dead even on re-play, and dead even on third viewing.
I've never understood why even rounds being scored even offends people. And I'd' much prefer all those "could have gone either way" fights to be declared draws rather than the endless arguments (and injustice) surrounding close and split decisions.

    Just my take.

Or how about John Tate for that matter, maybe much better as a twelve round fighter. Does anyone know what round Berbick knocked Tate out in? Was it the eighth? Or eleventh?

8th. Bout took place about 90 days > the loss to Weaver.
