Unfortunately I suspect, gay boy golden boy metro sexual ODLH dosent give a **** about the bad ass Quarry brothers .. always wanted to ask you ... you from Bakersfield or the valley in LA ???
Doug Fischer being out a job brings a smile to my face. Tom Gray as well, although apparently he’s already left. The staff they currently have are a bunch of talentless hacks. The Ring will not be missed, although of course in terms of its historical value to boxing it’s a real shame it’s going.
I do similar things. The record vs the top ten fighters that were ring magazine ranked is quality and should be used for greatness sugar ray ray Leonard is excellent! Vitali k is 8-2. I recommend reading cliff rolds article. It took him three years worth of research and goes over the top 100 ring ranked fighters.
the Mag, fails, like most everything else that lays all it's Hope on HYPE and Sensationalism, in an Age of Instant Gratification built on & pursued by Shallow Interests & Understandings of what 'determines' Life & Success in todays world. I emailed Boxing News years ago, with a way to Sustain Boxing and Improve Interest, by HI-LIGHTING the Past, not with vague Profiles & Pieces, but by thorough academic & research type approach, telling the Story of Boxing by being Straight about Boxers, their Careers, the Era's, their Opposition, the Oppostion Worldwide, the Greatness of Some Era's over others, calling a Spade a Spade, Damp Down todays Hype, tell it like it is, a 16 fight World Champion or Contender verse World Classed Contenders & Fringe Contenders from different times. Speak Truth, Educate, tell the History, Call out the Corruption, the Money Men and Backers, likewise hi-light todays True Greats and weigh them up HONESTLY back & forth over History, tell of Legal Stories of Criminalized or Investigated or Reported Corruption... Tell BOXERS and BOXING's Story... I promise you'll keep Fans Interest high, it then Spreads and People begin to Report and Compare Boxing More Objectively. they don't want to know, they just hold their breath, bank on Hyped Media Displays and Advertised Monies coming in... until veiwership & interest wanes and drops of altogether and then the inevitable BUST Comes. It's a Shame, I believe BOTH Sides of the History and Reality of the Sport and/or Business, just like any business, would Thrive under such integrity. it's like Politics, Government and Rule - too many people KNOW and as a result, the majority is No Longer Fooled, no matter how much of an Iron Clad grap hold you inflict on everyone - Collapse ALWAYS Comes.
Thistle, I always felt that under Harry Mullan's editorship, BN really did a fine job of blending the old with the new. I loved their historical pieces and Ron Olver's recurring piece 'The Professionals' along with world, European and club shows. I was glued to absolutely every piece. After Mullan passed away and Claude Abrams took over the reins I kept up my subscription for a year before discontinuing it. It didn't matter to me that he was colorizing it, it was the content change and it just didn't click for me anymore. I loved the blend of old and new as you mentioned. Regarding Ring, several years back when Nigel Collins was running things i actually e-mailed him with a thought that might help promote their sagging sales. Now I'm no genius on these matters but I said to him, "Why don't you download all Ring magazines the way Ebony and Jet did and anyone with a subscription to Ring gets free access to the historical website." Pretty simple I thought, but he simply replied that it wasn't viable at this time. A true visionary that Nigel Collins fella.
You know, you'd think with the right editor and authors that The Ring could be a successful little magazine. Fill it with excellent high quality photos, do a good mix of current and old, get some good interviews, see if you can enlist some fighters who are really into the history to contribute articles, etc. Jeez, send a reporter out to Tyson's place with a big bag of weed, a tape recorder, and a tablet with youtube on it used to pull up old fights, would probably walk away with 10 articles worth of material from him alone.
Yeah, I have done the same, they always say, "Change is often resisted, before it is realised..." paraphrased here. But yeah, there has been some Good Material, sometimes better than at other times. I have Ron Olvers book "the Professionals" he had intended to do a folow up Book or two, but never got around to it. I also have his Piece on my Grandad... Yeah, that idea of yours, about the Ring or ANY of these type of Magazine Periodicals, could revive interest with such undertakings. I have emailed them about 3 Book ideas, which I will keep quiet for now, in case I come onto some money, I will do it myself. But YES, they Could Be Great Magazines again... as far as I'm concerned they have too ALL Stop the Hype and the B.S and Tell Boxing & Boxers Story for what they really are, Backed by Actual Reports and restricting supposed Reporters & Historians who neglect & avoid that Mandate!
Nothing could be done. Print media is fading quickly and just not a big enough audience for boxing. I will miss the ring tremendously. Was my introduction to rating systems. And always valued their top 10. If a fighter in their top 10 had defeated 2-3 other guys in top 10 I knew that fighter was legit good. Sad day.
Delano California 30 MILES NORTH ON 99 of Bakersfield (born in Ventura, nobody leaves Ventura My father moved us to Kern County when I was but 2!! I never recoverd either WOULD HAVE BEEN A SPOILED BIKINI WATCHING SURF RAT). Delahoya did show Jerry Q. alotta respect at a cauliflower alley club get together, I had a great pic of them , which has now eluded me.
It is sad, although I stopped buying it many years ago. The sport in my opinion went way down after the 90s were over, magazines became to expensive, and the internet changed everything. I used to look forward to getting the new issues each month. It is sad how times change.
