You chose a fighter who fought Whitaker when he was clearly past his prime. I responded with a fighter who fought Margarito when he was clearly pre-prime.

So when exactly do you consider Whitaker's prime then? Consider Whitaker was 32 when he fought Rivera.

 

People always bring back that Cotto didn't go to the body. When you go to the body, you have to plant your feet down, meaning that you are easier to target, especially from a taller opponent. He would have had TWO broken noses if he had tried that. He is brittle. He should have done the stick and hold routine.

 

And? He was 35 when he fought Tito, by which point he was completely drug-addled and shot. Do the math.

If you want to get technical, he was past his prime when he moved up to WW, but as for his WW prime, that ended after he moved up to face Vasquez(a bigger, much stronger, harder hitting fighter with an equal chin to Margarito) at JMW. After he came back down he was never the same, due to lack of motivation, drugs, and wear and tear from aging. Fighters of Whitaker's style are among the earliest to lose their prime, given how they rely on reflexes and physical gifts to go with their technical skills.

If you'll notice, even Whitaker's stance had changed by that point in his career from having his hands at his chest, one above the other to having a high, semi-wide guard. He simply wasn't the same fighter. The Rivera fight he was just plain out of shape. Compare that to his performances against McGirt, Cardona, Chavez, etc. Considering you base all of your arguments on just watching the fights, why don't you take your own advice and come to a reasonable conclusion.

The thing is, if you were supposedly the boxer and then failed to put the tempo to your advantage, it means you were not able to outbox the other guy.

And then, if you made a tactical error by not executing the right plan, then definitely, you were not the better fighter.atsch
