Mac went right too the Number one contender status, with his 24-0 record and a one round knockout of Jack O'Halloran. After Quarry did him in, he was a fringe top ten 11-20 guy. He was never knocked out again , and went distance with the Greatest 15 rounds in Tokyo. He never was able to beat a top ten Heavyweight, He was supposed to fite Quarry in the Outdoors LA Coliseum. Quarry's co-Manager Flores signed the fite with Aileen Eaton. Jerry said no way and they fought at the Garden in NY.-Mac was also supposed to fite Ron Lyle in Denver in 1972, had a very suspect training injury. A war hero who lost his best friend on top of him in a fox hole. Was A great guy personally, who attended Quarry's funeral In Shafter. Comparing whom I think he might have a good matchup with, Bobick, LeDoux, Randy Stephens, Middleton, Cobb, Knoetze, Kirkman, Ellis to name a few. He would have beaten Kirkland Lang if given the opportunity!
I still don't understand how he became the number one contender without beating a single opponent in the top ten.
Yes I completely agree but there was a lot of them , promoter's I guess are the culprits, Cooney Barely beat anyone in the top ten. Joe Bugner never defeated anyone in the top 5 or 10 for that matter, Knoetze received a number one WBA rating for knocking out Bobick!!, Duane Bobick also was ranked third or fourth without a big victory of any kind. Karl Mildenberger , and whom did Oscar Bonavena beat to get a 1970 #1 (WBA).
He beats Cleveland Williams twice, knocked Folley,Spencer and O'Halloran in first round, he was very good. He went 15 rounds with Ali gave him Helluva fight and also had Foreman type of power, good durability and very good stamina. If he was working harder he could be a champiom.
Well his business acumen aint. A McDonald's endorsement was right there! Unless they thought he wouldn't garner much interest which I understand. Not like he was a champion no offense.
What were Williams, Folley, Spencer, and O'halloran's rankings when he beat them? He also didn't give Ali a "helluva fight". He won two rounds on one scorecard, one on another, and was completely shut out on the last.
And Mac Foster fight with Ali is hardly shown. Is this one you tube now? Mac didn't beat many top guys, but for a while was rated in ring magazine's top 10 form 1969-1971. He lost to every decent fighter he meet and has an inflated KO percentage vs journey man and trail horses. Maybe the power was there, but he didn't land it enough. Or maybe it wasn't that great. I think he is over rated.
But did he still beat them so easy? Same with Chuvalo, won just two rounds but still gave Ali kidney problems. Also how many fighters did 15 rounds with Ali? What about Foreman, Liston, Williams, Patterson...did they went full 15 rounds with Ali? Nope.
I’d love to see 1975 George Foreman vs. John Conteh or Victor Galindez in a scheduled 10 (not as part of the Toronto Five exhibition).
The 1972 Mac Foster VS Ron Lyle Denver signed bout of 1972, would have answerd a lotta questions. Mac pulled out with a supposed shoulder injury, which the doctor was not to up on the injury?
Strong points , however none of those opponents were at the top of their game when Foster beat them, Folley did beat a WBA top ten guy in Billy Joiner around that time, Cleve Williams could still fite albeit his top contender staus was way gone, Spencer like Foster was never the same after Quarry swatted him.
Williams was washed up, Folley was 39 Spencer had lost his last 3 by ko. O Halloran was never more than a trial horse
