George Chuvalo vs. Jerry Quarry: Was it a fix?

Chuvalo, he was so a gentleman when he did boxing telecasts, and like Jerry Quarry for CBS VERY INSIGHTFUL, you would never know he was so rough and tough and a rule breaker ( I guess because it was in his tactical arsenal) . I VERY MUCH LIKE CHUVALO STILL DO, BUT HE WAS NOT "NEW" TO BREAKING THE RULES, GREAT JOB ON "AVENGERS GO TO CANADA" and he never got a Commonwealth shot.

 

Chuvalo was far from being either a gentleman or a good sport when it came to losing,..especiaily with Floyd Patterson. After losing the decision to Floyd in their Feb 1965 bout, Chuvalo was as petulant as a little boy....and when Floyd came over to console George after the decision was announced, Chuvalo stood there with his arms folded, and wouldn't even give Floyd the courtesy, and respect of even looking at him...didn't even acknowledge his presence, preferring to scowl and sulk like a typical bad loser.

 

Yep, it was close, but Floyd, according to the top boxing mags back then, "hit GC hard and often...and outboxed his man"....Floyd also gained new respect in this fight...and "covered himself with glory" btw...by taking everything that Chuvalo could dish out...including one hell of a body attack en route to winning the decision.
This fight remains special to me because it's the first complete boxing match that I had seen up to that point....however, I had to continually fend off my paternal uncle's attempts at changing the channel to watch this stupid basketball game. He aggravated the spit out of me by doing that, but I prevailed....with my dad's help, that is.

 

Wow. What a way to start. My first fight was Ali-Coopman. But in spite of that, I kept coming back.

 

Agree. I've heard stories about him. Don't know if they are true. I do know he was a very competent and unobtrusive referee. Had a laid back authority. You are barely aware of him when you watch The Rumble In The Jungle. You are always aware of A Mercante when he is the third man in the ring.

To me its possible but not plausible , the money they made which was good then , was ridiculous to today's standards of such an important heavyweight bout in the standings. Quarry $25,000 Chuvalo $15,000. Jerry made that 4 years later in the same ring against Randy Neumann!

Jerry was up at 3 like gangbusters then plopped down and took the count on one knee, That was a much better punch then what i'm hearing here, Short left hook, and was not it high on the head? however I agree NOT A KNOCKOUT PUNCH That Quarry could definetly take. Take a page from George Foreman's statement vs Ron Lyle Jerry "Get up and win"

OKAY i'm gonna say no not a dive, and not because I'm in Quarry's book "Hard Luck"
Zack Clayton would reportedly go to dressing rooms and fighter's for some cash to see it there way, And Quarry told him to get lost.
