Henry Cooper vs. George Chuvalo

Henry Cooper would not fite George Chuvalo under any circumstances, He said he did not even want to shake hands with him. I never understood this myself, these guys were gladiators and fought anyone anytime pretty much, Henry had a good chance of beating him ,Henry beat like 8 ranked heavyweights the Ali knockdown not withstanding.

Pick 'em -or maybe George 3-2 odds he did have 30-40 lbs on 'Enery

 

I don’t think Cooper was a gladiator, I think he was a professional boxer who (along with Wicks) calculated what was best for him and acted accordingly, and as such walked away with his wits and, until the Lloyds deal, his bank account intact. And I think George Chuvalo is someone he wanted no part of.

 

As far as I can ascertain,Richardson held no world top ten ranking when he fought Cooper in58 and 68.
Urtain ,in 1970 was not ranked either.
Nor Bethea in1962.
London met Cooper 3 times and was ranked for 2 of their fights.
1959 no8.
1964 no 10.

 

I think Chuvalo would be too tough for Henry and wouldn’t have needed Henry to cut up because Chuvalo would have knocked him out.

 

Yes, and remember George or Bob Cleroux would have 15 rounds to do the job, “Empire” style!
