A very balanced piece on Johnson. As with most fighters of his era it's difficult to rate just how good he was but I'll say this. He had more guts than a slaughter house.
I'll say. It's a bit hard for us to appreciate these days, just how much black fighters had to endure back then. All they wanted to do was fight, same as any white man Jack Johnson, I've a ton of respect for him. He had to have that confidence, pushing himself forward like he did. If he'd been a placid, not wanting to rock the boat type fella then I don't believe he'd have gotten half as far as he did. He deserved to be at the top, the man had skill set years ahead of his time.
Can only judge a man on his own era. He was one of the best of his era. He was a huge personality, probably only matched by Ali and Tyson on that front. If I could use a time machine to interview one fighter, it would probably be Johnson. He'd probably be hilarious and have a ton of wild stories.
