Lewis' chin is one of the best ever in the HWs

Mercer was a very good puncher, he almost knocked down Holmes with a straight left that actually looked like a jab.

 

Foreman's chin was A level, Lewis likely deserves a B, but no better.
You agree that KOs & KO% are a poor indication of power? They are one of many things that goes into it: opposition, overall skills, combinations, accuracy etc...

Similarly, you cannot reasonably ignore all context & *only* count how many times a man is down.

1) Foreman had many more fights than Lewis, it is not close.

2) Foreman fought until he was 11 years older than when Lewis retired. And started as a pro when younger.

3) 2 of the 3 guys who dropped him got it done mostly because Foreman was exhausted. That rates endurance in his first career, not chin.

4) Only Lewis was one-shotted, by Rahman.

Your consolation prize is that Lennox was one of the best HWs ever.

As has been gently pointed out to you in other words, your Ego is committed to a conclusion that favors the boxer you like & identify with.
Since you have no good argument that Lewis had anything like among the best HW chins ever, you should re-calibrate your opinions.

Instead of cherry-picking the facts to favor your wishful thinking.

 

Lewis' chin is a strange one, he was iced twice which would suggest glass, but he fought plenty of punchers who didn't remotely trouble him, i suspect he was susceptible to a bomb but his hall of fame skillset kept him out of trouble for the most part, if that kind of makes sense.

 

And yes he did. Especially this huge leaping left hook.

It was right in the lower region of B level. Ok he got hit hard with a single punch from Tua. But it was just an isolated shot from an already tired Tua. He was missing 80% of his punches not by an inch but my a mile + Lewis used all the little tricks and fouls to tire him up. And it was already round 6.

Thats no evidence for me. He is far away from ATG Chins like Chuvalo, Marciano or Ali.
On the other Hand he got knocked out cold from Rahman and McCall.

Tyson took the smash from Ruddock a couple of times. He walked right into it, just like into Tuckers uppercut in round 1. He ate crisp punches from Douglas for 9 rounds. Same for the Lewis fight. But he is far away from having a superior chin in the HW devision. I rank him somewhere between b and c similar to Lewis.

I'd rate his chin in the region of 6.5/7.0 its definitely above average, and gets a bit underrated due to his KO losses.

 

C level. Maybe C+.

Average or above average. Certainly not one of those iron chins like Vitali, Mercer, McCall etc.

 

It's weird to rate bcuz he got iced by Rahman n put on qu33r street by Mccall but took good shots by Tua, Mercer n to a lesser degree even the force ghost of Tyson.

To his credit he did avenge both losses n improved his defense so he didn't get hit clean too often. Then u add his leaning and ATG jab to push his weight around in clinches tiring his opponent faster or keeping them at bay.

He really didn't need an iron beard bcuz he adapted after Rahman 1 w Steward bit to say he had an elite one is laughable. C+ or B- at best.

 

I'd say his chins definitely better than some try and make out. He lost twice in kos that he later avenged.
He took shots from some of the best with out going down.

B is fair. He's underrated and took shots from Briggs, Tua, Mercer, Vitali and did fine. He's also been stopped by 2 high-mid level guys. I think A is fair too considering all the power punchers who had a chance to hit him and couldn't do anything.

 

It's underrated (I voted B), but it is nowhere near the best. That's a joke. If you had a top 10 list of chins he wouldn't make it, so no he doesn't have one of the best chins. I don't even know if he'd make top 15.

Are all comfortably ahead of Lewis. He isn't within the same zip code. Getting brutally KOd twice in his prime completely removes him from that conversation.

 

I would pick the poll option if the was a C+ to B - I'd say about 6.0 - 6.5 out if ten. Giving him a 7 is too much for me. 6.0- 6-5 is above average. 7 is good.

Starched twice by one punch that landed solidly early he was.

 

One thing that should be said is this.

No fighter could afford to fight Lewis, with a plan that depended upon his chin bailing them out.

 

Lewis would have at least an "A" chin if not for the 2 KO losses.
But there is no getting past them, he was around prime ages, not preparing properly for altitude or laughing/open mouthed does not mitigate that no "A" level chin, near or prime fighter would get starched like that-with a single punch.

It is not like Foreman who you can give some honest dispensation for going down due to exhaustion vs. Young & Ali.
There you can downgrade his endurance & fight wisdom, but not his chin.

Although the bombs absorbed vs. others must be credited to him, those 2 KOs must downgrade him by at least a grade, to "B" max. Still pretty good.

I see that the/first post said Lennox was "quite young" when losing against McCall.
That is completely wrong-he was in fact 29.
