Jerry Quarry Vs Joe Bugner??

I like Quarry here he could box when he put his mind to it and didnt go into macho mode .Bugner would not push him to do that.

 

Quarry was the better fighter with the lesser physical attributes. I’d still favour him to win a UD over Bugner.

 

Their respective fights with Jack Bodell are a tenuous form line.

 

I agree with the trending opinion. Quarry outboxes big Joe, the latter frustrating you throughout the bout because he'll appear that he's only going at 3/4 pace. Joe was simply never in love with the game, but his physical gifts and talents carried him very far, relatively speaking, and he was certainly durable and courageous enough to hang with the best.

 

If we’re talking about both being at their absolute best then I think this is very close, and it’s not outrageous to think Bugner could take this.
The Bugner that fought Frazier would be an issue to Quarry and the jab and Bugner’s willingness to mix it if necessary and unload aggressively would make this a close run thing in my opinion.
Quarry could mix it with most but he was best as a counter puncher, he may have to force the issue more in this one which may reduce his effectiveness.
Quarry was greater, and in most scenarios I would unhesitatingly pick him over Bugner, but assuming Bugner is the best that he can be then I take Jerry but it’s wafer thin possibly a split decision in a hard fought encounter.

 

Quarry by clear decision people talk about the Bugner who fought Frazier. And whilst it was a spirited effort he still lost in the vein of 10-2 with a knockdown. Quarry beat better fighters and was consistently better fighter overall.

Yes the common opponent factor is not often a very good pointer. Jerry did better with Bodell whereas Joe put up more competitive fights against Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

 

It should have happened Fergy. In the 1973/74 window,Joe and Jerry were the best of the rest after the big 4 of Ali,Foreman,Frazier and Norton.

Very hard one to call. I lean towards the counter punching Quarry's workrate earning him a close points verdict.

 

Quarry's brother James told me they sparred in London 1972 , And Jerry had zero problems at all. Jerry's common opponent really dwarf's Joe's - Bodell, Middleton, Lyle, Shavers. Yank Durham said you can only beat Jerry by throwing combinations, only time i seen bugner throw combinations was against the likes of Richard Dunn. (HE WAS DUNN!)
