This was a really interesting listen and well worth a look Robin seems like a top bloke, really honest and open lad and he had a very interesting career. He claims he ended up with only 20k form the Calzaghe fight, arguably his biggest fight. He also said Warren pressured him into fights when he wasn't physically and mentally prepared and that Hearn pimped him out with the prize-fighter gig. Broke down into tears at the end about how his life turned out after boxing, pretty much ended up skint despite being one of the stars of his era. Personally I remember Robin as part of the 'spice boy era' he was pretty much the David Haye of his generation. He was also on the end of some bad decisions, notably in Germany against Ottke. At the end of his career (aged 41?) he was on the end of an IJL early stoppage for the British and he claims he found out from a fan on facebook over a year later that Kenny Anderson failed a drugs test for the fight. Hearn totally blanked him after the loss. Thoughts on Robin and his career? He is often overlooked and undermentioned on here when discussing the great SMW era of boxing.
Was at my first boxing club, I was in awe of him, he was fast then! Used to see him around in his M3, I was astonished he's still got it Equally astonishing was his purse for Calzaghe, I had no idea he got so little. He was definitely jaded when he lost his title, fought far too often after winning it, although his title winning performance and defence against Pretorius were terrific. I listened to that podcast as well, I was always a bit gutted at how his career panned out, he seemed to be cast aside a bit after the Calzaghe loss, the Maghee win should have given him a second wind. Still he can be proud of a fine career. Hopefully be a fair few to chip in with positive comments re the Grim Reaper!
I actually laughed when I read this, as if one of the most obviously sossed boxers around was not utilising sos himself. No need for the violin on that one.
Really lovely fella. Did a clinic session with with my Nephew when he was getting his Trainer's Licence that Jamie still talks about.
Stating that Robin Reid is clearly sossed (and still to this day) is neither negative nor positive. It shows his character that he brings sos up when anyone with a bit of sense can see his hypocrisy. You're a bit of a sensitive Susan trying to mum people on an internet forum!
I may sound a little heartless here but I'm trying to be objective, what is it with boxers needing to be financially mollycoddled? They are grown men ffs, if they can't look after their earnings then that's on them at the end of the day. I get that they are often young and from rough backgrounds but many other billions of workers across the world are and they get their **** in order. I'm not sure if it is already being done but you'd think managers and promoters would have schemes and advisors to help steer boxers down the right path with their finances as it is a shame to see old glorified boxers in ruins.
You're kidding right? Most Managers and Promoters would sell their own Grand Mother's on a street corner for a fast buck FFS! I'll give you 3 guesses as well why boxers box. For one, most of them are from less than pleasant backgrounds, with poor schooling and worse prospects. Very few are truly media savvy as well so struggle to build their profile to help with ticket sales or develop a post boxing career: not every boxer is an AJ or Eubank Jnr.
Robin was a handful for anyone. A top level operator who was teak tough and could fight. I enjoyed watching his career unfold and was lucky enough to see most of it. The 20 k payday from the Calzaghe fight sounds awful. That was a really tough fight for both men and shows what a good operator Robin was.
I will listen to that cheers I met him on the afternoon of the Calzaghe fight when I went to collect my tickets and he made time to chat even though Ian Darke was waiting to interview him for sky sports … I thought he won and most of the arena did from what I remember however he clearly lost when watching it back close at points though think Joe broke his hands in the fight… followed him from the start and I new he would beat Nardiello for the WBC even sky give him no chance I thought that was weird was low key event on a Thursday or Tuesday night in Italy…. Think he was only 25…… stopped him to the body I think…. He 100% beat Ottke …. And maybe could have beaten Lacy but he was under prepared and believed the Lacy hype… good fighter … had the potential to be great.
Also was way past prime when he fought Froch and him and Brian Hughes obvs had a plan to chuck in the towel if it got to much but he caught Froch with so many right hands he was giving Froch advice at the end of the fight and Froch seemed all ears…. Seems a decent guy
Boxers think that they are entitled to mansions, supercars, gold diggers and Michelin starred meals. The amusing thing is that most of these boxers I see moaning about their finances are boxing once, twice or thrice per year. What's stopping them from doing some other work?
