Lmao the only guys to successfully crowd Louis were tanks like Galento and Marciano (whom he fought when he was about 137 years old). Greb doesn't have even 20% of their power and durability. Louis splatters Greb in under a round if he tries that. It would be like a feisty leopard trying to crowd and pressure a Siberian tiger.
Louis would be shaking in his shoes at the thought of getting crowded by a volume punching natural middleweight. Next up.......Joe Louis vs Benny Leonard. Joe had trouble against fast tricky movers and lost to Eddie Futch in sparring multiple times. Can Joe overcome Benny's terrific speed and style advantage? I can see it going down to the wire, perhaps a SD.
You're describing a fighter without defensive tools. Why were opponents not teeing off on Louis at will? If he had slow feet, no guard, weak technique, no head movement....what else is there?
lol .Don't forget how Bob Pastor made Louis look in their 1 st fight in which the biased judges showed extreme partiality towards Louis in their score cards.Louis was also very lucky to get the nod against the agile fleet footed Arturo Godoy in their first fight, again being rescued by a corrupt referee. The edited highlights of the first Walcott fight also prove conclusively that Walcott deserved the decision.
A young Louis took out Lee Ramage twice in a total of 5 rds,Ramage was considered an excellent boxer. If Louis did indeed have slow feet and poor defence , carried his left too low, and had no head movement , you have to wonder how ,in a career that spanned from1934 to 1951 he was only beaten 3 times whilst amassing 66 wins along the, way, Two of those losses were when he was far past his prime,1 against Charles was after a 2 years + retirement ,the other in his last fight at the age of 37 against the future heavyweight king Marciano. Three losses against men who held the heavyweight title in an 18 year career . Louis had trouble with fast clever boxers? Who doesnt? In 69 fights Louis was only decisioned ONCE and that was after coming out of a 2 years+ hiatus.June 1948 till Sep 1950. Perhaps that is a pretty good indication of his ability to handle fast boxers?
It's simply never ending isn't it. Never ending but on loop of course. Nothing changes, nothing is learned despite mountains and mountains of facts getting thrust forward. You'd think Louis was lucky to ever win a pro fight let alone the heavyweight championship of the world and then to defend it 20 odd times? Defies belief
Did you see the first Godoy match? It was a SD win and there is an argument that a Godoy deserved to win it. He landed more punches than Louis did. Godoy's defense and style and movement gave Louis fits. In the clinches he bulls Louis around the ring. He strangely kisses Louis in the 15 the round while staying away from him as if to say thanks for pay day day and title shot. Watch the film. I'll score it with you. Bear was a slow moving, up right fighter who landed and threw few punches in the match. The mobility Louis showed in this match he never displayed before or after. Louis said he did not like ti be crowed and that was his weakness. He said that, not I.
It's fortunate that we have all this footage of Greb available , so we can see how he would exploit Louis' multiple flaws
Fight report of the fleet footed ,defensive master Godoy v Joe. "Louis won sloppily against a bruising, mauling and rushing fighter who knew no fear or retreat." The New York Times The only rounds in which the three agreed were the 3rd, 8th (both to Godoy) and the 14th (Louis). Lecron had it 10-4-1 in rounds for Louis. Godoy thought he was entitled to a draw but the New York Times reported the decision as "eminently fair" - its reporter giving it 10-5 to Louis, stating that other reporters had a similar result.
He had limited defensive tools , which is why he was hit often by men how could box...several of them. Check the score cards or films. And the knock downs by low skilled men such as Braddock, B Bear or Galento. Offensively Louis was very good. I say what we can see. If you think Louis had fast feet, a high guard, and a slip and duck / counter punching style the floor is yours to say so.
Joe beat Godoy clearly in their first fight too. The AP and NYT both scored it 10-5 for Joe. INS was 9-6-1. EOTR scores similar with no-one scoring it close and only one card having less than a 5 point difference. Tough fight but one Louis was in control of.
I think the consensus is that Louis would win, but that talk of him starching Greb within a minute are, shall we say, somewhat optimistic. What Louis has in his favour are fast, accurate and fluid hands. It would be hard to stick and move all night and not get caught against a guy like that. In my opinion, of course.
This content is protected The United Press scored the fight even, giving each fighter five rounds and calling five even. The only rounds in which the three official scorers agreed were the third, eighth (both to Godoy) and the fourteenth (Lotis) Joe Louis: "This was the worst fight I ever had." Arturo Godoy: "Of course, I think I win. Certainly, I should get no worse than draw. It was a SD with the winner up to debate. Louis had his ref Art Donovan a questionable score cards man who was very pro Louis is the decision of Tommy Farr fight only giving Farr one round ( he was also non American ) and in fact was protested by the Joe Walcott people when selected!
