Which fighter had better defensive skills, Don Curry or Benitez?

I think Curry’s performance against Honeyghan was a combination of him struggling to make weight as well as facing an opponent who might have had his number stylistically

 

Weight problems were definitely an issue. Impossible to tell if he had his number bcuz tbf that wasn't Curry who fought say Starling, Jones or McCrory. Honeyghan had no time machine he fought n beat the Curry he had in front of him fairly n decisively.


Moving up, Curry was clearly a shell of his WW self but again those guys like Nunn, Norris n McCallum did their job beating the Curry who faced them.

 

At the end of the day I just don’t think he was built for longevity or to do anything above welter. He had awesome skills and natural talent but his body just wasn’t made to last

 

Yes. But still a bad mistake to step straight back with hands low and chin high, one a pro at that level shouldn't make. Everyone have their lapses, though, he was just made to pay very dearly for it.

 

It was a combination of Curry's struggling with weight and also being ill-prepared since he highly underestimated Honeyghan. There were even talks of him facing Hagler which was why Curry was overlooking him.

 

That would have been ugly

 

Mugabi never recovered from the beating he took from Hagler so I could only imagine how much worse it would have been for Curry. I think Curry was spared from a real thrashing.

 

I think we take for granted how impressive it is to b a multi weight champion especially while beating the best available. Agreed he did not look impressive after WW and also agree that he was lucky not to have fought Hagler. Mccallum was wailing on him enough.
