I'll name some great heavyweights throughout the ages and you name me a fighter of a lighter weight class whose style resembles his or as near as dammit. Jack Johnson Joe Louis Rocky Marciano Sonny Liston Muhammad Ali Joe Frazier George Foreman Larry Holmes Mike Tyson Lennox Lewis
Wow, interesting topic. Offhand, I would say Ali - Howard Davis Frazier - Curtis Parker Lewis - Carlos Monzon Holmes - Ike Quartey The rest I'm going to have to think on
Joe Louis--Koysta Tzysu. Both fought in a manner to set up the straight right hand and had exceptional timing. Alexis Arguello also fought in a similar manner.
Johnson = Floyd Mayweather Louis = GGG Marciano = Arthur Beterviev Liston = Carlos Zarate Ali = Willie Pep Frazier = Henry Armstrong Foreman = Stanley Ketchel Holmes = Packey McFarland Mike Tyson = Terry McGovern Lennox Lewis = Thomas Hearns
Nice list - I particularly like Frazier = Armstrong. I also like @AwardedSteak863 analogising Tszyu/Arguello to Louis.
Yeah, Tsyzu and Arguello are at worst equally good comparisons as GGG. Louis punch delivery was better than all 3, they had the "snap" of Tsyzu (I.e. quicker, p4p, than GGG and Arguello), allied with perfect balance and technique, required to punch in fluid combinations, of GGG and Arguello (better in this regard than Tsyzu, imo).
Jack Johnson - Bernard Hopkins Joe Louis - Jeremy Williams Rocky Marciano - Bobby Crabtree Sonny Liston - Courage Tshabalala Muhammad Ali - Larry Donald Joe Frazier - Bert Cooper Mike Tyson - Gary Bell Lennox Lewis - 1990's Wlad Klitschko
The low hanging fruit for Ali is Jose Legra. I see a bit of Marciano in Sung Kil Moon, Ricardo Lopez and Louis are close enough? Jose Torres resembles Mike Tyson for obvious reasons. Jack Johnson is a real tough one I haven’t watched a lot of the lower weight classes from that era and that’s really were you’d have to pluck them from to see that mauling, clinching strategy. Smokin Bert could be for Joe Frazier but I feel like it doesn’t really count as Bert and Frazier were practically the same size. I think Cooper might be the naturally bigger guy.
I went with Beterviev, but I think Marciano applied pressure more relentlessly than Beterviev. I almost went with McGovern, who was much more relentless than Beterviev, but he was more of an explosive front runner, than the attritional Marciano. A Beterviev, McGovern and Armstrong hybrid, might be representative of Marcianos style and attributes.
Absolutely! All of these fighters had excellent footwork and most importantly to their success was their balance and how strong in their stance they were. A lot of folks associate footwork with speed and movement but great footwork to me is dictating the range that the engagement takes place and always being in position to deliver offense from a balanced stance. All four guys had murderous straight right hands and were never wild with their punches.
