When Does A Joe Frazier Vs Jimmy Young fight, Become Even?

• Around 1977 -1978. When a fighters who best stuff is being a pressure fight and he can't do it for long, it's over.

 

Frazier was basically gone from the game by 77-78

Frazier was the boss man of the gyms in Philadelphia. He was still sparring into the 1980s. I remember him being interviewed in London after watching a Frank Bruno fight. I think it was versus Phillip Brown. He was asked would he put Marvis angainst Frank And Frazier said “Marvis? give me six week and I would beat Bruno now.”

No matter how Frazier fared against Foreman and Ali at the end of his career Jimmy Young was never Ali or Foreman level. he really wasn’t.

People saying Frazier wouldn’t have had enough left by the late 1970s but I saw Ocasio beating Jimmy Young around that time.

I highly highly doubt Frazier has enough in the tank to beat Young in '76.

I say 1975/76. Frazier was worn out after Manila. There is no classic swarmer in HW history, who could conserve his condition on the highest level over a period of more than 6-10 years. This style just needs more dedication, more effort, more work and more durability. And also these guys simply exceed the cotingent of blows to the head that a human body can handle. Just look at Quarry, Weaver, L. Spinks. Even Tyson and Norton which were much more technical fighters, who avoid much more punches because they are kinda weak chined. So Rocky did everything right to retire with 32 after just 8 years as a pro. By '77 it would be a shame and very hard to watch how Young would declass Frazier.

 

Hi Fergy. 1976 I would say as Joe had nothing left after that exhausting effort in Manila. In fact I would make Jimmy a slight favourite .

Jimmy was handling bigger heavyweights with ease, heavies like Ron Lyle, Shavers, Ali

and by 1975, you could no longer get by with just a left hook

note the difference between those with versatility (wins over Ali AND foreman) as compared to those lacking in skill (Koby 14 , Koby 5) when matched with the same fighters at roughly the same time!

 

Frazier had the wrong style for Jimmy Young because of the pressure power and body game that he employed.

Young could handle the bangers, and trouble just about anyone but his power was not enough to keep Frazier at bay and Joe had decent speed
