So I've been boxing about 4.5 months and thought I was an orthadox boxer. About a week ago though one of my coaches (who is involved in national squad training) said I looked more like a natural southpaw and told me to switch. Any Ideas to make the transition go any smoother? cheers:cool:

being a left handed orthodox puncher has a few nice benefits. the best two of the bunch being excellent speed and power on the jab and a more naturally strong left hook. i love it and wouldnt change to southpaw for anything. theres a few people like that at my gym and everyone who spars us hates our jabs n hooks.

I like to be able to fight both, and I switch quite often. If you know how to do it, and if you fight somebody who isn't real experienced...It seriously screws with them. Switching is very dangerous though because if somebody were to catch you switching, hits you (while your legs aren't under you) your ass is going down. So, there's two ways:

    1) SAFEST. Go to a safe distance away from your opponent, and simply switch.
    2) WHILE FIGHTING. I used to practice this a lot. What you do is say your fighting conventional. Give yourself room where there at the end of your punch. Throw something like a jab, straight right hand, and WHILE your throwing that straight right, you bring your right foot to the front. Your not only going southpaw, but your now in close...So you work the body (or whatever your preference is).
You have to do it seriously fast though, and it takes some practice, and good judge of distance so your not on top of them when you switch. I like the 2nd tecnique more because they have no realization you even switched cuz your glove was in there face the whole time. It's not a huge advantages or anything, but switching is dangerous, and this is one of easiest ways me and my trainer came up with. I like to fight inside with southpaw anyways (the right handed double hooks are killer) , and this way I'm in it whenever I'm close.

    im a switch hitter
    theres 2 types
one is a normal switch wer your out of range switch ur feet n stay southpaw
or thers wat i call the open switch wer u just bring ur bac foot infront of your front font while in range or goin backwards u bring ur front behind ur bac foot but this way ur mor likely to get hit on the switch n lose balance

Yeah, I feel more comfortable with my jab when im southpaw and I'm told that is the most important punch in boxing so I figure its the best thing to do.

That's what Jeen Kune do teaches. They say 80% of your punches are lead hand...So, why would you want your slow hand out infront? If your right handed for instance, the right side of your brain is more dominant, and also your right eye is supposed to react quicker. That's why they teach lead hand/ lead leg infront.
My instructor is more about training how you fight so he never really fights conventional stance. I disagree though if your boxing...I do both. Why limit yourself? As for street fighting though...I'm definitely go southpaw. I mean how much power does it take for me to take my bare knuckles, and mash somebody in the face? Not much. Couple right handed jabs and there seriously hurting. Put a combo together, and there laying down...

if you can pull off being a switch hitter I envy you. I dont know much about fighting southpaw but I suppose just keep practicing and it will start to feel natural.

I started orthodox till i hurt my elbow at the gloves,i turned southpaw to protect it and turned into a great southpaw but i still feel more comfortable right handed cuz im overall better definsive when im orthodox and southpaw im kinda limited offinsive as well i started to switch alot, priminal above had it perfect.now i find myself fighting southpaw out of instinct not even knowing it

Actually, the left side of your brain is dominant if you're right-handed.
