George Foreman vs Jimmy Ellis 1973

Roy Harris was another legit defense for Patterson but yeah I get your point. Jimmy Ellis had a good career and was indeed a champion. He was just out of his league against Ali and Frazier

 

I actually think Ellis had the all the right tools, and I even believe he had the potential to beat Ali at one time. I just thought he would use his energy up too fast, and would often get too excited in the moment and throw too many wasted punches. Other than he was world-class 4 my money.

 

Foreman has admitted that his team avoided Jerry Quarry.

 

With the greatest of respect, I don't reckon there were lots of guys like Floyd Patterson.

 

That's a cool story if one is trying to add to Quarry's credibility, but there's no doubt in my mind that Foreman would have stopped Quarry within a few rounds.

 

By 1973, Ellis was next to washed up and Foreman is rolling over Joe Frazier and Ken Norton. Jimmy wouldn't hear the bell for the of the third.

I don't disagree but George has said it none the less .

 

I don't think that there lots of guys who fought just about every World class Fighter in their division for over 15 years, beat most of them and only had 3 really bad defeats.
There maybe a dozen in the whole history of the sport.

 

There's two problems with that:
1) Ellis has a style that naturally and historically defeats the slugger, unlike Frazier and Norton who were both pressure fighters
2) Ellis was not washed up. He was post-prime. He was not peak anymore, but he was dangerous. Nearly knocking out Shavers in the 1st round, and lasting 10 rounds with Bugner and 12 with Lyle and giving them fits is good, all those guys were prime. However, I do agree about the outcome. Ellis would not be able to beat Foreman.

 

I didn't mean I don't believe the story, I do.

 

I see... and I agree. Floyd can boast taking defeat well. Except for Ali II, Floyd always surged back from losses to make a big noise in boxing.

 

Tbh i don't see Ellis getting past 2. Certainly not a knock on him, was an excellent fighter. Just don't belive against Foreman of that time, he'd stand much chance.
