Actually, you can be deducted a point for excessive holding especially after 10 warnings. The same way you can be deducted a point for a low blow.

I wasn't expressing my thoughts, but trying to guess Golota's 'reasoning'. He was a street kid and probably view such 'hugging' as a sign of weakness though I might be wrong.

As for clinching as such I don't find it unmanly I do believe it should be simply disallowed to put your hands around the opponent and penalized like any other foul - because it actually is against the rules. It would change the game, shorten a lot of fights but so be it.

Sure but it's hardly ever executed. When was the last time you saw a point taken away for holding?

Not clinching is the most masculine way. Who wants to hug another topless, sweaty man? Fight him off.

I think I'd rather be hit in the nuts once, given that I would have enough time to recover.

But it's very hard to answer what would be better it terms of winning the fight. I imagine a solid low blow is really discouraging, makes you worry about the repeat, takes your momentum away.

    Your right abou
Gervonta Davis likes to hold on for dear life and so does Haney but we will never see a point deduction.

Sure, that’s fine but it doesn’t change my reply - per street fighting “etiquette” I can’t see, even Golota, making a distinction between holding/grappling and nut punching.

But again, clinching is allowed to an arbitrarily judged degree, so it isn’t actually technically illegal until the ref in question deems it to be so.

But sure, if it was totally outlawed, it would be viewed as an unequivocal foul - and adjudicating on same would be cut and dried - no grey areas.

Would you be in favour of that?

    Ha - that’s a very good question.

We might think it better to have no clinches but I think boxers naturally need the opportunity for intermittent periods of respite - to conserve and recharge which can actually promote and prolong the quality of the bout otherwise.

Only very short periods should be allowed of course - but that’s where the limited allowance of same can be open to misuse and abuse - but it isn’t rocket science for a fair ref to mentally allow for, say, up to 10 secs at most for a clinch - and also keep in check the frequency of clinching.

An analogy that is more extreme would be to remove the 1 minute rest periods - just let ‘em keep fighting, non stop - no breaks.

With that, it would be easy to envisage the quality of a bout quickly degrading, with both combatants fatiguing well before time.

I think reasonably allowed, intermittent clinching can help to extend and maintain the duration and quality of a fight that is entertaining in all respects otherwise.

And brain damage in already probably the most dangerous sport there is.

Whaaat? So, taking the scenic route from A to B, you’re suggesting the allowance of clinches increases the likelihood of brain damage? No? Hmmmm.

That's not actually an unbelievable scenario.
