Defend yourself at all times. Not Jones's fault the ref was lame and slow. Very questionable disqualification. Montell Griffin however did good for some 7 or 8 rounds so kudos to him. Another very good Roy Jones fight was the against Argentine Jorge Locomotora Castro. Nobody else ever managed to hang in there with Roy like that during his career.
Im guessing OP has never seen the fight because Griffin didnt expose ****. And got destroyed in the rematch.
Apparently, he was NOT. Scores from Boxrec. RJJ ----- Griffin 77----------75. Judge Hasslett 76----------75. Judge Smith 75-----------76 Judge Perez
Griifin was winning most rounds before getting stopped, Roy was landing hardly any punches, just constantly throwing his jab short cause he was scared of Griffin`s fast counters, Jones looked confused.
His 90's - early 2000's ATG career is basically a some what green Hopkins (still a good win), undefeated Toney (great win, no rematch), HW Ruiz who some including me were calling one of the most boring & worst champion in a long time but a champ none the less, and finally Tarver and we know how that went. Some of the other big punchers and threats from the UK are missing, and that may not be his fault but still, these fights didn't happen. His ego was so huge, that he couldn't even concede anything for the Hopkins rematch so how in the hell was he going to make any fights like fighters like Eubank, Benn, Collins, Calzaghe, etc. His resume is weak for being considered arguably the best fighter of the 90's by some.
Roy liked to give people show for their money, and even if he really struggled, the rematch would make Joe Louis proud.
Duran still went on to do great things beating Moore, Barkley, go the distance with Hagler in a close fight etc. Either way I don't understand how Jones is overrated, for having some stylistic issues vs an unorthodox opponent. Who was actually very good fighter as evident by his two wins over Toney. Jones was also on the verge of stopping Griffin in their 1st fight, and then quickly erased any doubt with a emphatic victory in the rematch.
