What's your opinion of TKO artists being refered to as KO artists?

To be fair, a lot of TKO's are TKOs because the current climate in boxing is to stop a fight too early rather than too late.

Using your example of Beterbiev who is more of a KO by accumulation guy rather than a one punch destroyer, I am sure Artur would have many more actual knockouts had his fights been allowed to continue.

There definitely should be a label difference of some sort. Beterbiev stopping a guy through accumulation vs Wilder taking someone out cold with one punch shouldn’t both be official tko’s on paper. A KTFO option perhaps?

A stoppage is a stoppage to me whether the guy is KO'd or beaten down to the point that it's wise to stop the fight. What's the point of seeing a record of 26-1 (8KO) (10 TKO) (2 RTD)? I'm good with how it is.

 

TKO/RTD = KO.
You ****ed up the guy so bad he either had to quit, or get called off because he's out but won't sit down.
Early stoppages are case by case, but most of the time it's just merciful

 

Doesn't matter, that just means that they punched hard enough or had the finishing skills to punish the opponents so bad to the point of forcing stoppages from the ref or their corner. Even if you don't consistently knock the other fighters out cold often but still finish the fight without going the distance you are still considered a KO artist.

Example: Edwin Valero was a fighter 27-0 all by KO and the majority of them were TKO wins. Wilfredo Gomez and Sonny Liston’s KO wins record consist of more than half of them being TKO.

 

What proportion of Foreman's opponents were knocked unconscious? I don't think it's very high and he was taller, longer and heavier than almost all of his opponents (unlike Beterbiev) and HW is the easiest division to score KO's because they hit so hard proportionately to their chins.

If we look at Wilder's opponents Stiverne 1 and on, weak chinned Szpilka was put to sleep but how many others? Helenius but there was probably a dive or quitjob element. Breazeale got up at the end of the count but was all over the place. Stiverne 2 was finished but not unconscious. Stone cold KO's are pretty rare, at least at a certain level, even at HW.

I'd wager that Beterbiev's opponents were relatively more durable than Foreman's or Wilder's, given that most of them had never been stopped. 37% of his fights were over in 2 rounds and 63% were over inside 4, so there's not a huge amount of accumulation there. He's scored 46 KD's in 19 fights (a good indication of power) and has stopped everyone, whereas Wilder and to a greater extent Foreman failed to stop a number of opponents. Relative to his division, I'd say he's the best KO artist of the three.

 

Stoppage is a stoppage. Plenty of refs call a fight off mid count and get the fighter the attention they need. Few would’ve complained if Fury had lost by TKO in the first Wilder fight for example

 

I'm sure the guys who were on the receiving end of Wilders hits would classify them as a KTFO option.

 

Wilder has a lot of TKOs as well.

 

the California comission has that rule where every stoppage gets recorded as a straight KO. as with so many things in boxing, it’s arbitrary nonsense.
