He was over 40 facing the P4P guy in a higher division. What did we really expect? Canelo talked a lot of ish about ending his career etc etc and GGG obviously decided that he'd box off the backfoot and catch ginger coming in. When Canelo's big talk ended up being hot air, Golovkin turned up the heat but it was too late. Given the circumstances Golovkin did fine. It's Canelo's stock that dropped.
Ever since GGG fired Abel Sanchez he has only cared about money. Chasing the rematch and only C/D level fighters for 4 years showed where his head and heart were..... His legacy could have been better but i still rate him as an ATG.
Canelo has been declining for a while now. The way he modified his style shows me his aware of his physical limitations. Peak Canelo was Chavez Jr IMO. He was awesome that fight.
In my eyes, I think he's perceived for what he is - an aging, but still formidable talent. He is clearly in decline, but to date still skilled and smart enough to compete at an elite level.
I'm sure my rating system is a little different than yours, but i wouldn't rate Derevyanchenko and Murata as a C/D level apponents. I agree though, he could have done more.
I thought that was a great performance as well, he was also at his best in both Golovkin fights but even more so in the 2nd fight. The Callum Smith fight was impressive as well.
Down. Taking this fight ended up being make or break for his legacy. Yes, he should have got the first win at least and anyone who denies that is dishonest, but the fact is he was going in on paper 0 1 1 with Canelo. While it remained like that people could still claim he at least split results despite being past-prime, that's not bad. But he had to win that third fight or at least go all out. Or just not take it if he was going to play it safe. He ended up giving himself little chance of victory really and so fuel to the worms who will now claim Canelo always had his number. History won't care he drew the first due to corruption, could have been given the second and was 40 for the third. He blew it. He always needed KDs or a KO to win. He had to go for it, ironically just like his old coach said in the second fight. Golovkin is pretty smart for a boxer but he fell into a trap three times with Team Canelo. He thought he could win having a boxing match the first two times and then again when he had been aged another few years.
His stock went down for me. His punches don’t seem to have the same zip on them. I can’t envision any scenario of him rocking Canelo unless he jumped straight into a golovkin punch.
