Don't think I've ever seen anyone even try to diminish this one. McCallum has said that he made a mistake by going to Italy only a few days before the fight instead of truly acclimating himself, but that's about it as far as extenuating circumstances, and it's not a terribly powerful one.

The only people that ignore the circumstances of Gomez are Sanchez die hards who want him to be more then he was- he died young so the myths fill in the gaps and make him larger then he was.

Yeah, totally agree. It could be said Ray fought “dumb” in deference to being “macho” and that’s on Ray, a consequence of psychology which is always a part of boxing - but boy, Ray still fought extremely well and the division climber Roberto still had to contend with and overcome that.

Of course, 7 years later, Ray gained his own advantage from Marv fighting “dumb”. It’s easy to critique all fights till the cows come home - but being realistic, I wouldn’t diminish either of those victories (Roberto’s or Ray’s).

 

Michael Spinks had bad knees at the time of fighting Tyson, and his best weight was by far Light Heavyweight.

ODLH shouldn't of even been fighting Hopkins, as he got a gift decision against Felix Sturm. Also Middleweight wasn't anywhere near his best weight.

Jeff Lacy was over hyped and had struggled vs the likes of Sheika, Vanderpool, before fighting Calzaghe. And then after getting exposed by Calzaghe lost to B and C class fighters.

I have to agree, I think Leonard vs Hearns is a good shout.
Thomas Hearns was in his absolute prime, undefeated 32-0-0 with 31 finishes inside the distance (29 by kayo and 2 by retirement). Hearns was the WBA World Welterweight Champion and a scary member of the famous Kronk gym. In the fight, Hearns was winning on all three of the judges’ scorecards by as much as 129 – 125 in the 13th round. Between rounds, Angelo Dundee famously told Ray Leonard “You’re blowing it son, you’re blowing it!”. For the beginning of the 14th round, Ray Leonard came out guns blazing and hunted Thomas Hearns down and stopped him in his tracks halfway through the round.
But if you really wanted to, you could probably always find something to nitpick.
