Thats the interesting part. during the war he wouldn't be able to fight many of those guys, perhaps only defending against fighters from the axis or neutral countries, thus possibly increasing his reign's longevity with lower opposition.

 

Schmeling has one of the great what if careers in Boxing - what if he had rightfully gotten the call vs Sharkey in the rematch. What if he had rightfully received the Braddock shot instead of Louis after defeating Louis. What if he had gone through with the Tommy Farr match creating “2@ champs when he was protesting the blatant swerve by Braddock.
Schmeling could have - a greatly enhanced career or a somewhat diminished career.

I think "a massive disappointment" is an understatement. Given the times, Louis would've DEFINITELY been a pariah and POSSIBLY would've been killed.

 

Nah . He would have been a hugely tragic figure.

 

This is the stuff for treatment by Tarantino - but he preferably flipped horrific, undesirable historical facts into desirable outcomes - this would be the reverse concept - which might invite potential movie titles such as “Once Upon a Time in Boxing” or “Inglorious NaziT*rds…..”

 

Schmeling said that he was hoping to defend the title against Max Baer once he'd dealt with Louis. The fight would certainly have been a natural - Baer was back on top after his win against Tommy Farr, he'd beaten Schmeling back in '33, and he fought with the Star of David on his trunks. Who better to give one in the eye to Hitler if Louis hadn't managed it?

 

i saw a youtube video that compared him to Captain America, i've always liked that. the closest we figuratively came to punching Hitler on the jaw like Captain America did on the cover of his first issue is when Louis obliterated Schmeling in the rematch. not to mention the humongous affect he had on the color line in sports, and civil rights in the United States as well as his impact on Black America as a figurehead of success they could achieve in spite of the systemic racism and inequalities that existed (and still exists). Louis is such an icon
