How would Dmitry Bivol hold up against Archie Moore?

Would lose heavily outpunched if not knocked.

 

Embarrassingly.

 

Plenty of Light heavies went the distance with Archie.

 

Anybody of the fundamentally sound but rigid stand-up Soviet school who is mostly dependant on a steady jab-orientated output without expansive offensive skill and notable speed/power, even with good distance control like Bivol, is going to struggle against the best version of Moore imo. If he could get a handle on a master of the textbook like Harold Johnson, it's tough to see Bivol having much joy, good fighter though he is.

 

I think Bivol would have some decent moments before eventually getting stopped mid rounds.

 

Bivol's base may be Eastern European, but he's incorporated a more extensive variety of defense as his career has progressed. He used to rely initially on movement and a high guard to avoid incoming, but has become quite adept at moving his head and keeping it off center, as well as parrying shots effectively. Anyone who has that level of defensive awareness isn't getting embarrassed or blown out by anyone, even Moore.

The one problem in a Bivol vs Moore match-up for him is in terms of offensive approach. He's a sharp puncher, but not really a powerful one. And, his MO has been to land three in twelve while his opponent is limited to one in five. Not sure if he can implement that against a technically sound Moore over twelve. At some point, he's getting forced into a different sort of fight.

My inclination right now is Moore by clear UD. But, if Bivol holds up well against Beterbiev, I might be inclined to change my opinion.

 

Archie at his best was on a different level, Bivol would have his moments but Archie knew all the tricks and I can see him setting up Bivol and landing some big right hands. It could go the distance and if it does I have Archie by comfortable UD.

 

Let's look at it this way, there's no way he's gonna stop Moore so he'd have to outbox him. Bivol is an on the move hitter but I don't think he moves as well as Archie. He's also not physically as strong as Archie, not as good defensively, and Archie has a better offensive arsenal.

 

Interestingly. Bivol's style is very similar to the Soviet style that used to dominate the amateurs and Olympics, and I think it would trouble Moore for a bit. However, I think the Old Mongoose eventually becomes victorious.

 

Archie Moore is a top ten p4p all time. Enough said.

I don't know your criteria (H2H/limited to those you've seen footage of?), but based on greatness achieved in their own era, its especially difficult for me to see JCC and Marciano ahead of Greb, Langford, Charles, Fitzsimmons and B. Leonard, who are all in my top 10. Not to mention Walker, Gans, McFarland and Ross, who are just outside my top 10.
