A pretty good list. Personally, I would take Pep (Almost entirely down to the fact that I don't put that much of an emphasis on H2H, much more on resume and accomplishments) and Ray Leonard out and put Moore and Charles in. Apart from that, the rest of the top ten is my top ten just moved around a bit. In all honesty Charles NOT being placed higher is probably the worst thing in the top 15 though Dempsey and Johnson sneaking into the top 20 is probably worse overall.
The only fighter listed that is not in my top 11 is SRL, who I have at 17, so no major complaints with the top 10. Charles and Fitzsimmons are conspicuous by their absences, though.
Dempsey and Johnson in the top 20 are definitely the worst things about this list. Especially as McFarland, McGovern and Ryan don't make the top 25.
It's not a bad list at all, but surprised to see Ali in the top ten. Is that common among you guys? I can see the argument, but seems like you could find someone even more deserving
It seems that the IBRO are pretty high on Dempsey. Here are their Heavyweight Rankings (as of 2019): https://www.ibroresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/02-IBRO-Heavyweight-2019.pdf
Heavyweight are always handicapped by p4p lists. P4p was created to favour the smaller fighters. The fact that Tyson in the late 80s was the last heavyweight to top or get near the top of a p4p lists in the last 50 years or so since maybe prime Ali tells you that.
Walker Smith Jr no.1. Roberto Duran is right up there. One of my Personal favorites is Thomas Hearns. I think he was so damn close being the greatest fighter ever. I'm not sure he makes to 10 all time, but I LOVE Hearns. I think Loma has the potential to hit all time top 5, if he beats Teo in a rematch , then the third time, and then has a couple more accomplishments. But I don't really have a Full list or anything. I think Aaron Pryor was also one of those guys that was super close to top 5 all time great, but needed a FEW little things. Mike Tyson lb for lb and age, if you froze him in time when he became champ, and every other fighter in history had to be as good as Tyson was at that age or bust, no one would ever be better. I think there was a point in Mike Tysons career where if you measure him against every other fighter ever at the same age, he is bar none the best.
Agree with this. There are guys at lighter weights with insane resumes that in my opinion Ali doesn't have a chance of beating. Ali managed to do more for his rating with his motor mouth than his skills.
Defeating four Olympic Gold Medalists, twelve of Ring Magazine's fifty greatest heavyweights of all time, and six members of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame makes him pretty special, especially considering his biggest wins came after three and one half years of his athletic prime were spent in exile.
