You could say that, but how the hell did he win a WBC belt. About as bad as Sam Peter winning the heavyweight version. Let’s hope Jack relieves him of it.

He won a WBO title and defended it ? Its a legit world title. As for Bellew, say what you want about him as a pundit, but i think there is some revisionism going on here in your post. He won WBC world title is that more prestigious than WBO ? Also he beat Makaubu who has gone on to win a WC 3x. Also lets not forget that a large majority of the "hardcores" were saying Makaubu was going to sleep Bellew.

Anyway the original point is still valid, he has 2 options -

    1) fight an unknown untested opponent for a WC, his oppponent could be the real deal and beat him (whilst Smith earns a small amount) then everyone mocks Smith or Smith beats him easy then everyone says he is paper champion as his opponent is crap.

    2) Fight Eubank in a fight he will probably won again and earn a near career high payday and move on after.

    Which would you pick ?

Why do you say everyone would mock him if he lost?

In answer to your question, he should box Eubank Jnr again next quarter for a quick turnaround and then move on.

Ok mock maybe strong but if he beats this fella easy for a WC everyone woupd say well who did he beat and call it a paper title, similar to the point you made about WBO title.

Im not saying it’s a paper title like it used to be viewed as, but with 4 belts in every weight class and especially winning a vacant one against someone not ranked in the top 100 of the world generic rankings which Smith did, people are not going to buy that rubbish as being a world champion.

Take the world title fight and if he wins, defend it in the rematch with Eubank as his first voluntary.

If he doesn't win the world title, the rematch with Eubank is still there anyway.
