I was wondering what would happen to a boxer's record if they moved between weight classes? For example let's say a bantamweight became a featherweight, would their record start from 0 or stay the same? And how would this effect their ranking?

Yes. This is how it works, it starts at zero.

Their records remain. Rankings are up to the abc organizations, so largely decided by popularity or bribes.

Their record as a pro boxer remains the same.

Referencing your example, assuming they'd never fought in the FW division before, then they wouldn't have a record in the FW division.

The best example is Manny Pacquiao, he was Champ in 8 division's. His win/ loss record is on going. If you want to get ranked in a division you have to start beating notable guy's in that division.

Your record is ongoing but your ranking changes between classes.

Obviously a premier fighters get an edge rankings wise. That is why a Floyd or Manny (or Inoue/Loma/etc) can jump the line and fight champs right away

Errrr sure, let's do it, boxing is struggling at the moment, so let's make some new rules and liven it all up.

    What about..

Once you move up in weight you are never be allowed to move back down.

Fight until a finish, either a TKO, KO, DQ or Retirement, no points decisions, like the very early days of boxing.. it stops all those dodgy decisions.

Each time you jump weight classes the fighter literally has to jump over someone that weighs as much as their new weight class. If they can't jump over that person they are stuck at their current weight class for 18 months, then they can try again. Its why Golovkin stayed at middleweight so long until recently.

Also their record stays the same regardless of weight jumps.

Good Idea. Personally, I've been an advocate of people who move back down in weight being made to fight in a tutu for some time.
