Where do you rank Joe Louis punching power in history?

While I am broadly of the same mind, there is a risk of this argument getting over stated.

There are some pretty scary testaments to Louis's raw kinetic power.

Joe Louis at the very top. At the peak everyone hits more or less the same and this has become pretty much the rule. Some will say Shavers had a unanimous opinion, there are cases of fighters saying Tyson hit harder at one point such as Tillis who changed his mind- Norton who said he was about the same as Foreman. Guys who say Frazier hit harder then Foreman. The list is endless. The point is always delivery- Louis was an express post in that department.

There definitely are, but he was so accurate and punched so well in combination that if he was like a Wilder or a Shavers there would just be loads of dead folks on his record.

You kind of know what Walcott means when he talks about their punching power and as it related to each other, for all that he got the prime of one and the vinegar stroke of the other.

I think you mean overall rating/effectiveness as a puncher.

For me it would be like this:

    Power: 7/10
    Speed: 8/10
    Accuracy: 8/10
    Technique: 10/10
    Combinations: 9/10

Overall rating as a power puncher: 8.4/10.

This may not seem that impressive, but if you do the numbers for a lot of other power punchers they won't even come close even if their raw power is higher than Louis.

When you watch a lot of more recent fighters, they will throw a hard punch but, when they try to change them together the punches lose impact. This is because they get their feet too far apart and the weight doesn't transfer from one foot to the other. It gets hung up and causes little wobbles in the balance of the puncher.
When you watch Joe Louis let his hands go his feet are under his shoulders and the weight is constantly shifting from one foot to the other. When you punch that way you begin to chain together the weight transfers and each punch is hard than the one before it. When you do this you can sit down hard on the third or fourth punch in a sequence, instead of the hard punches being at the start of the combination.

Look at Louis lift a 240 pound man off the floor with his left hook ... (21:00)

Say what you like about Carnera but he was as brave as anyone ... look at his face begging the ref to stop the fight .. the same guy that months earlier took eleven knockdowns vs the murderous punching Max Baer .. (11:30)

I had the opportunity to congratulate Joe Louis on winning the number 1 spot out of a hundred as the hardest puncher of all time. I hope you enjoy the video.

Jim Braddock said Louis forced his teeth through his mouthpiece and into his lip with one right hand.
Louis smashed Uzcudun's gold teeth out with one right cross leaving them strewn on the canvas like a charm bracelet . Joe's clinical demolition of the huge Buddy Baer, making Buddy turn a pirouette from the force of the punch is a study of velocity and destruction.

    Power only at 7?

    Speed only at 8?

    Accuracy only at 8?

Are you even watching the same fighter as me here?

You could bump his hand speed to 9 when he goes full throttle.

I mean on average his punches are a 7, 8 when he puts his body weight into them full force. It was the combination of power, hand speed, accuracy, timing, etc that made him lethal. If his power was above an 8, he'd have like 30 deaths in the ring.

9/10 would be guys like Morrison, Ruddock, Bruno, Baer, etc. 10 would be Wilder, Shavers, Foreman, etc.

    Weaver???

    Power: 7.5 - 8 / 10

    Speed: 8 / 10
    Accuracy: 9.5 / 10
    Technique: 9 / 10
    Combinations: 9 / 10

+ what really makes him unique is the effortless way to snap out these Bombs. Nobody could throw big shots like that with so much ease.

I get that, but if he is breaking bodies in freaky ways, and throwing 240lb men around like rag dolls with his punches, then you are probably not looking at a 7.
