Would Joe Calzaghe Have Made It Past The First, Against Prime RJJ?

Honestly i wasn't even trying to be disrespectful to the poster, that's not my style i don't like getting into slanging matches or name calling. I just feel like his comment came out of the blue. He's putting words into my mouth that i didn't even say, and then has the cheek to try insult my boxing knowledge. I'm certainly not the most knowledgeable poster on the classic forum but i do know my stuff, and i think the posters who know me here know that i'm always respectful in debates.

Overall i just don't think it's a good look for a new member, to be insulting a veteran poster especially on classic forum. Where i think pretty much most of the members here are the most respectful and knowledgeable. Hopefully if i interact with this poster again we can have a more respectful encounter, but for now i rather just move on and forget this topic honestly.

Fantastic response. Rest assured, there are those of us who do actually read whole threads and who don't just drop in and fall prey to recently posited strawman arguments - you've defended yourself perfectly and with class.

 

He was caught, but so was the other guy, and they decided to let to fight go forward with no repercussions. The greater point is that a cheat is a cheat is a cheat. You can't trust that this guy hd any real exceptional athletic ability, and that is all. Jones was the drug champion, Joe was the clean champion. That is all.

I see Joe going the distance,Fergy. It would be one way traffic though with RJJ totting up something like 10 - 2 in rounds. Joe was really good but prime Jones was on another level entirely.

 

I'd think the consensus is at super middleweight a prime version of Roy Jones Jr causes big problems for any opponent. Lets not forget though Joe Calzaghe didn't fear bangers Jeff Lacey was built up to be an animal and Calzaghe put on an absolutely masterful performance. So I don't think Jones Jr takes Calzaghe on the intimidation factor here, however prime Jones Jr's reflexes were scary the Art Serwano knockout was brutal he only has to clip Calzaghe and it could be game over.

Looking at Calzaghe's career has had a few controversial decisions go his way a split against Robin Reid (who didn't get a return) an early stoppage of Omar Sheika and another split against Bernard Hopkins. A side from that he beat two future champions in the ABAs Dean Francis in the Semi Final and Glen Catley in the 1992 Final. He should have gone to Barcelona 1992 to compete on the GB Boxing Team but it didn't happen. Great wins on his resume against Chris Eubank , David Starie , Richie Woodhall, Jeff Lacy, Saiko Bika, Mikkel Kessler and Roy Jones Jr (although there are claims he was 'shot' when they fought) still can't take anything away from Calzaghe's achievements as a boxer. Many have speculated what the outcomes would have been like if he had fought Steve Collins, Andre Ward and Carl Froch but I guess we will never know?

 

A prime Jones and a prime Joe could fight 10 times and each time it would be a convincing UD for Roy.
