Wilfred Benitez vs Felix Trinidad - who wins

Benitez would get sloppy and Tito would blast him out.

 

I see this playing out very similiar to the b-hop vs Tito fight. I dont see a knockout though, Benitez gets the decision.

 

This is difficult. It's interesting how opinions change here. Trinidad was seen as powerful but limited and if you could box a bit, you would outfox him because he couldn't deal with boxers, blah blah, blah. Benitez's reputation was still completely intact as a boxing genius whose only fault was a sadistic father and maybe a suspect work ethic. This too I think is exaggerated, at least the work ethic part.

I love Tito, he's so entertaining and honest a fighter, and I like how he never fell so in love with his ridiculous power that he stopped throwing combinations. He ALWAYS threw multiple kill shots. Thats what made him so deadly. And he was fundamentally so sound; perfect balance, textbook combinations, good control of distance, excellent conditioning, everything. And let's be frank, who isn't troubled by great boxing skills? Every fighter ever is affected by them.

Benitez slips a lot of shots here, but I think Trinidad's workrate and power are too much and he escapes with a close but unanimous decision.

 

Benitez starts off hot, floors Tito hard in the 4th with a left-right combo. 5th round Tito slams a left hook directly into Wilfred's groin and Wilfred drops in agony. He gets up but the low-blow has taken the fight out of him. Tito wins by late round ko

 

At 147 I think Tito takes it, probably by KO but at 154 Benitez would win a decision.

 

I've definitely got Benitez by decision at 154 and he'd be a decent show at 147 too tho it's a lot more up in the air.

I thought Wilfred really filled out as a fighter at 154, I think he does a number on Tito at that weight. At 147 at his best Tito was hard to handle and just might get to Benitez, though if he can't connect solidly he loses a UD.

 

Look if peak Hearns n SRL had issues despite winning I always favor Benitez against most at his best. Trinidad was an ATG too so I dont doubt him being able to stop Benitez but at best I c him dropping his fellow countryman. Trinidad was such a skilled textbook boxer along w power so I dont want to overlook that. Benitez gets up if dropped and wins a UD imho.

 

Interesting fight. Benitez was a master boxer but he quite frankly had a glass jaw. I think he was so fundamentally gifted that he didn't really need to train hard for a lot of fights, his father forced him to fight grown men all of his life which took a toll on his body in the end. But due to this experience he was supremely confident in believing that he could beat anyone in the world during his prime. Even being brain dead at the tail end of his boxing career the first thing he said when he met Sugar Ray Leonard was that he didn't train properly in their fight, whether true or not we'll never know, but that's how he truly felt deep down.

Trinidad at 147/154 was a monster, my favorite boxer in history, I was there to relive his prime live. Trinidad has inhuman stamina and conditioning, power in both hands and threw killer combos from all angles. Despite Benitez's short comings, I think a focused version of him wins a UD vs Trinidad. Trinidad can be stuck in the mud if he can't land his power punches, his style is built for hard grueling fights. It's possible Trinidad goes for the knockout but I personally believe a focused Benitez would make him look foolish and win a clear UD.

 

Back when the NSAC used to send people complete lists of addresses of every boxer who fought there for the last 20 years, in 1996, I asked them for nsuch list and they sent it. It had Wilfred Benitez's address so I wrote him requesting an autograph. I got a letter from his mom telling me that she read it because by 1996 he could not read letters of course but she was touched and asked him to sign a photo for me which she sent along. Anyways, she gave me their phone number and we became real friends, our friendship lasted 12 long years until she passed away in 2008. Three months before, I went with a group to Puerto Rico and I promised her I;d go see her but since I was in a group, and I wasn't driving, it became impossible for me to fulfill my promise because they were not interested in visiti ng this old lady, and the way crime was at that time in my beautiful islands, taxis were really not a good idea. To this day I am broken hearted about that but I did call his sister and apologized about that before they moved to Chicago.

Im saying this because Clara, his mom, once told me that all the rumors about his father are unfounded. Sure, he was hard to him as a trainer, and he gambled away some of the money Wilfred gave him, but according to her, he was a loving father who didn;t take an extra dime as people like to say. And he was a good dad, according to her. Ever since, I changed my view of Gregorio Benitez. Maybe he was hard and had hard edges, but he wasn't as bad as they make him be, I guess.

Also, to put the topic in context: once Clara Benitez told me that Wilfred and Tito met one day and Wilfred asked for a fight and said "I'll knock you out in eight, Tito!" Who knows maybe, in both of their primes, he was right? I like Wilfred in this one.

Oscar outboxed Tito at 147, I definitely think Benitez could. Benitez at 147 or 154 by UD.
