I tried to put this in another thread but not sure it would have fitted. Just read an interview with Natasha Jonas where it's clear she doesn't have much time for Matchroom given her exit, although doesn't specifically say anything bad about the Hearns: https://fightpost.co.uk/2023/03/19/...r-me-i-honestly-dont-care-what-anyone-thinks/ Is it just me or has there been a building sentiment against Matchroom amongst UK boxers lately? Given the hard time with Okolie and Buatsi lately, Matchroom bidding sensible (losing) numbers for purses where they'd have gone the extra mile in the past, etc? I can't even remember what Jonas's problem was at the end but clearly it bothered her. Harper rematch? I'm struggling to fathom why it is, other than Eddie's aim to grow outside the UK. His comment about Buatsi and Sky the other day, that DAZN is many times bigger globally even if it's smaller in the UK, kind of summed it up for me but just wondered what others thought...
I have been involved in professional boxing for many years and I would like to emphasize that I have nothing against Eddie Hearn or Matchroom, but if you move around in boxing circles and talk with peole you will quickly discover how hated Eddie Hearn is everywhere. He is the undisputed champ in alienating people. I do not understand it. What does he want to achieve ? It's normal for boxing promoters to have both friends and enemies, but it's crazy when we're talking about Eddie Hearn. There is no one who will do him any favors and it is his own fault. Maybe he got too confident ?
That's interesting, thanks for the reply. I have zero involvement in boxing, just read a lot about it. I'd been under the impression most promoters end up hated by some of their boxers, but many of them end up reunited later when time had passed. Frank Warren seems to have made his enemies down the years but few seem to have a bad word to say about him now.
Definitely Matchroom have lost their sex appeal. This is undeniable. Remember that Eddie quote. "Go and see all the promotors and then come back and sign with us" That doesn't ring true anymore. What's worse is, it still hasn't sunk in for Eddie, that he's not the be all and end all of the UK boxing scene anymore. He's also become a fan of legal letters and is sending them out left, right and centre. Something which he used to mock many other promotors for. To top it off, he's become bitter in his outlook. Something again, which he used to mock many other promotors for.
He’s too entitled mate. Never really had a proper job or responsibilities as he knows Daddy will bail him out if the **** ever does hit the fan.
Personally and I may be wrong here, I think DAZN now have very little interest in promoting any lesser known fighters In turn Hearn has less to offer them than he did under SKY which is why people are moving around platforms
Or offers them fights from around the world for the benefit of DAZN US, which is time-filler content for everywhere else. I think that was his point with Buatsi - go beyond domestic and the money's there; fight locally and they can't back it. In the past Sky would overpay for domestic clashes they could build up, so it kind of makes sense. And Hearn seems pretty bitter about this kind of situation as @BXNG101 said earlier.
Thanks for posting. Would be intrigued to know anything you can share on this as you're involved in boxing. Appreciate you most probably cannot tho. Good post regardless. I'd be rubbish in boxing I'm such a gossip I'd be banned within an hour.
I know some people on the game but not enough to call myself an expert at all just a well informed amateur. Cpuld dwell down for ages with in and outs but basically ist down to this - Eddie can make more money basing his business around the world. The Brit Boxers can make more money with beong based primarily in the UK.
That makes complete sense, and I'm sure there are contractual ties involved, but why would Eddie be bitter if his current business model doesn't suit boxers he signed before the DAZN era? He seems particularly bitter at Buatsi over it.
Maybe he thought he couod make it work or just simply he feels Buatsi is being ungrateful or even just doesnt like his business being bad mouthed
I remember a Joe Cordina interview a few months back where he was really annoyed at Matchroom, basically saying he's always kept in the dark and never really knows what's going on. Maybe he will be the next one to jump ship when his contract expires. About 11 mins in This content is protected
Ive heard numerous fighters say Eddie doesn't call or text back or anything as soon as they take losses or he decides he doesn't want them.
I suppose so but Eddie claims to be the most honest/decent/straight promoter going..If that was the case he'd have the decency to tell them in one quick phone call or message. He was really hyping up Anthony Sims Jr, then as soon as he lost. Sims said he never heard or spoke to Hearn ever again. Same with John Docherty and others. and Martin Bakole never got a reply or anything as soon as his contract was up.
