Not defending Boxxer, but we've got the worst pool of boxers we've had in ages, and we have the most UK promoters with TV deals we've ever had. We're just in a stage of diluting an already badly diluted product.
I just think Hobson is worthy of terrestial TV that's all. He seems to be in the sport for the right reasons.
I think this basically nailed it. Whilst the card on Saturday was horrible, Boxxer didn’t really have much to work with tbh. I do think Adam Smith being away and not being there to oversee things is probably having a negative affect as well.
Ye there's a lot of truth in your post. But just like the Gomez vs Giles fight, there's fights out there for Sky to buy. Atm Boxxer don't have any standout fighters/personality. They've shown how difficult a task it is to find someone to fulfil that role by throwing silly money at Okolie & now Buatsi. But there is plenty of trade fights out there down at area, English etc and British level that could be bought through negotiations with small hall managers/promoters or purse bids
Agreed more area/English level fights should be brought by TV promoters, cheap and generally good fun.
What was Shalom thinking with Joseph Parker ? He let him fight Joyce on BT and then a Cruiserweight in Jack Massey in an easy win way down on an undercard, and now he has no fights left on his deal. He's now likely fighting Demsey Mckean on a Matchroom Australia show in the summer.
The fact is Hearn inherited Sky Sports when there was no other competition about and right in a golden age of boxing in Britain Hearn gets far too much credit. When Hearn got Sky the other big names like Setanta etc had gone down the pan and ITV had pulled out of boxing again. Sky gave Hearn 100% control of boxing on their platform at the time so he basically had 100% control of boxing as there was no competition. Warren had to build his way back with failures like BoxNation until BT Sports came along and then Hearn fumbled the bag and went with DAZN. So now you have things fragmented over 3 platforms again which makes the big fights harder to make.
Hearn inherited the sky gig when Warren left to form boxnation and look how that went, he has come again of course on BT sport. Sky was great for Hearn and vice versa the drip effect of SS News promoting fights, having the boxers on and shows like the gloves are off. Adverts run before, during and after any PL football match to draw the casuals and it did work, guess we all know people that would buy the fights based on the Sky hype train. I know plenty that did. Boxing more than ever is a niche sport, I say this after decades watching, no terrestrial coverage of any big name fighters but moving to DAZN really hasn't worked. AJ is fighting Saturday and the casuals don't know and now the bubble is burst and off Sky don't seem to care!
Sky are missing Eddie let's be honest. I know he's only young in the promoting industry but Shalom lacks any real charisma.
The thing is fighters seem to like dealing with Shalom as he doesn’t make them feel intimidated, a bit like the friendly McDonalds service representative who takes your order.
Frank Warren cleaning up right now got all the best fighters and arguably got 4 of top heavyweights in the world
Personally I don’t mind him. Agree Hearn was great when Matchroom had the exclusive Sky Sports contract.
This content is protected Boxxer's stable isn't great to be honest. I remember when they announced the signing of Geordie Shore's Aaron Chalmers too.
