Seems to me Roach is indulging sensationalism there. There are many reaosns to believe Hopkins can win this fight.
I really do not see what Roach is crying about. Being tired does not equate to brain damage and long suffering, but then again maybe B-Hop takes a beating in training camp and that is what is getting to him.
Are you suggesting that you're in a better position to evaluate the extent of damage to Hopkins than the guy who's a foot away giving him instructions? Even during his best performances, he gets hit in the face. Over 42 years, those shots accumulate. That's not boxing, that's anatomy affected by physics.
Agreed. And there is no reason at all to believe that he is anything close to punch drunk. When was the last time he really took some hard shots? I think Roach likes to hear himself talk, and likes to read his own words in print. And if he really was concerned about Hopkins, he would talk to him in private. If he did talk to him in private and Hopkins didn't listen, then talking to Ron Borges won't change things anyway.
Roach also said Danny Williams had no heart before the Tyson fight. I really hope Pavik beats the **** out of Hopkins, but I don't think he will. I think Hopkins wins a boring fight.
what if Hopkins gets brutally KO'd, then what is Freddy Roach gonna say then? "I told ya so". Even if Hopkins losses another 12 round decision and complains that he felt he won its completely worthless. Hopkins is like 1/2 the fighter he used to be! WHY does he want to continue?
Roach wants to play father figure with everyone, Evander Holyfield ( after the Ibragimov fight in Moskow), now Bernard Hopkins, but it's curious that he doesn't dare to say **** about Oscar or James Toney - in the first case, he knows who runs the show and doesn't want to be left out of it, in Toney's case, he's probably considering what would be JT's answer to such an opinion. Hey, it's nobody's fault that Freddie has Parkinson... Maybe he should not train professional athletes in his gym due to his ilness?
Probably, because it would appear he enjoys courting the press. No way Hopkins gets brutally KO'd though. Nothing in his career thus far has suggested that is remotely possible. Why does he fight? Because thats what he does, the very thing we love about these guys is their eventual or potential downfall. We can't have it both ways. It's not as if we're talking about Holyfield here, some thought Hopkins won his last fight.
Most probably, Kelly will have to try twice as hard to connect against Hopkins like he did against Jermain, and in the end, Pavlik simply abandons loading up on each shot but looks only to run numbers on Hopkins... Like Joe Calzaghe did.
Hopkins showed significant decline in the fight against Calzaghe. He slowed down when he usually gets stronger....2nd 1/2 of the fight. He just didn't look right and Roach is correct to be concerned. I am too!
He is expressing fear for the health of hopkins - shows that he is a friend in my opinion. He could say nothing and make more money off hopkins but he would rather see him retire with his faculties intact..
If I was Pavlik I doubt I could in good conscience take the fight against Hopkins at his advanced age. He has to share some of the blame if something goes horribly wrong.
Pavlik's just doing his job, and Hopkins remains a capable, marketable fighter. It's Bernard's responsibility to retire, which he should have done post-Tarver. That was the perfect exit, but he's mucked it up since with the ugly victory over Wright and listless, embarrassing (faked low blows) defeat to Calzaghe. He has nothing left to gain and everything to lose, so why bother?
