    In 1979, WBC Champion Wilfred Benitez vs Davey Boy Green at 147 lbs. The Green of the June 1977 title bout against Carlos Palomino. Benitez was supposed to defend against Green in Monte Carlo, Monaco before facing Sugar Ray Leonard but negotiations broke down. Who would win this fantasy match and why?

    I think Green may have his moments early on with his relentless aggression, but Benitez starts to take over in the 2nd half of the fight and gets a stoppage late on.

    I think Wilfred completely outclasses him. Green doesn’t find the target much and Benitez picks him apart with counters.

    Somewhere in the second half of the fight, Wilfred lands a left hook and Green goes down like he’s been shot … which is how he tended to go down. KO around the 10th.

    Though Benitez didn't fight with the aggression of prime Ray Leonard, he'd still completetely outclass and dominate Dave Green. Benitez stops Green between 5-10rds tops.
    There's levels in boxing, Green isn't on Benitez's.

    Same here Richard. I see Green doing OK early but getting stopped late.

    Yeah. When Carlos Palomino stopped Davey Boy Green in round 11 in June 1977, it was a slugfest until Palomino landed that left hook to close the deal.

    Davey Boy was a tough little fella, in another era he could maybe have picked up a title. He fought the best.

    Personally i see it as an easy win for Benitez , but not as a stoppage, I think Green's aggressive style will make Wilfred a bit wary, but handle it comfortably

    Points win 9 rounds to 3 for Wilfred

    The class gap is huge and apart from probably the early rounds I can’t see Green who was game as they come giving Benitez any problems at all.
    It’s a clear points win for Benitez or a late stoppage with Green busted up.

    A bit of trivia here, Wilfred Benitez struggled against challenger Harold Weston Jr early in their 15 round title bout on March 25 1979, Gregorio, Wilfred's father/trainer had to slap and get his champion going in this title defense. Benitez came back to win on points in 15 rounds. The proposed title defense against Davey Boy Green was to have taken place instead of against Weston in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Many in the boxing circles agreed that Benitez was starting to get lazy in the gym since winning the WBC title from Carlos Palomino on Jan 14 1979 by close decision.
