He's new, and probably doesn't know what has and hasn't been done here how many times. Doesn't hurt anyone.

Despite the fact I am a big Hagler fan and don't like Monzon, I voted Monzon by decision. Too good at nullifying.

    Exactly Sal.

And it’s not like there hasn’t been 1001 other subjects, match ups and associated comments regurgitated over and over - it’s to be expected.

And subjects aren’t frozen with a certain contingent of posters who have already chewed the subject over.

Let’s welcome fresh eyes and fresh opinions.

And let’s welcome or should I say welcome back @Larry201038 - no need to apologise bro, post as you like.

I've always picked Monzon in a close decision over 15 rounds. Always open to change that opinion but haven't necessarily seen anything significant to change my conclusion.

However, does anyone think that Marvin's chances might increase somewhat given a 12 rouud duration instead of 15?

Over 15 rounds, I see Carlos really making his mark over the Championship rounds 13,14 and 15 and establishing a clear lead, albeit via a close margin.

Could Carlos necessarily compress his meter and pacing over 12 rounds for the same optimal effect? Anyway, just a thought. Two great fighters who would put on a great fight, however you slice it and whoever think might win.

Pretty much how I see it. 55-45 in favour of Monzon. 12 rounds would make it 50-50 for me. The only likelihood I'm confident in, is it goes the distance and its close.

Thanks Greg, I really appreciate your opinion. This match of course is also well distinguished by the fact that both participants possessed two of the very best chins ever.

I so respect Hagler's chin, boxing ability and determination but you have to respect the pride, confidence and boxing ability of Carlos Monzon too. His lifelong trainer Amilcar Brusa attributes his confidence to the fact that he had a 82 bout unbeaten streak all the way back to Oct 9 1964, he avenged all of his 3 decision defeats, including the 9 draws he had, all avenged except for the ninth, the other boxer did not give him a rematch. Monzon despite his party life with various females, was always in terrific shape, even smoked a pack of cigarettes a day during training, always trained hard, he had over 100 pro bouts. It would be a tactical terrific fight by both, Monzon like Hagler could adapt to his opponent's style. Hagler had a better looking style but Monzon's style could be monotonous but yet effective, he continued to win, he retired as champion after 14 title defenses, 7 years as champion.

Yes, both very proud warriors Rich. I like them pretty much the same, so for me, unfortunate that there would have to be a loser in this one - unless it's so tight, they call it a draw. Lol.

Ya The few that got Monzon KO Hagler are in left field.Monzon wasn't a huge puncher,he had good power but good power doesn't stop Hagler.Back in the day champion ship fights were 15 rd & i took a chance & put Hagler late tko.I will get a lot of push back for that but think it more likely that Hagler TKO him rather than the other way around. The only time i have ever seen Hagler hurt was early 1st round against Hearns & Hagler was still cool & hadn't warmed up yet. After when he started to warm up he started to walk right through Hearn's punches ( although Hearn's did break his right hand in 1st round don't think it would have mattered) But Hearns is considered P4P one of the hardest punchers of all time & no doubt hit harder than Monzon.

Carlos Monzon's record at the time of his retirement was 89-3-9, 61 KO's. He avenged the three decision losses early in his career that began on Feb 8 1963, his last loss was on Oct 9 1964, he then went on a 82 bout unbeaten streak until his retirement as World Middleweight champion on August 29 1977 after 14 successful title defenses in a 7 year reign as champion, 1970-1977. Carlos was rocked against Bennie Briscoe on Nov 11 1972 in round 9 of a 15 round title defense, he recovered to take a unanimous 15 round decision. Monzon was decked by no.1 challenger Rodrigo Valdes on July 30 1977 in Monte Carlo, Monaco in round 2 of their 15 round title bout. Monzon jumped up at the count of two, outboxed Valdes for the remainder of the bout to take a unanimous 15 round decision over Valdes. Monzon was decked by Jorge Fernandez in Jan 1966 in a bout for the South American Middleweight Title, he arose and won on points, so he had a good chin. That was Monzon's last fight as champion only to retire as champion at age 34. Monzon knew when to get out of boxing.

Actually he has 59 KO's.You didn't need to give me his resume I know all about him.He was a great middle weight the only reason i have Hagler beating him is that Monzon didn't have great balance & wasn't the fastest of middle weights.I still have him 4th greatest middle weights,he did defend his middle weight belt 14 consecutive times which Hopkins broke & Hagler would have if the had not robbed him in the leonard fight.Monzon also tended to fight straight up with out a lot of head movement & Hagler would have taken advantage of.I corrected his Ko from 61 to 59 & he also had 87 wins not 89.

Carl Monzon was a great Middle weight but his straight up style & not very fast with his has hands Hagler would have taken advantage of.Of Haglers 3 losses 2 were robberies including his draw he got in his first shot at the belt.Hagler hit harder & punched straighter.Hagler wins by decision or late rd stoppage as in those days champion ship fights were 15 rds.

    In a one-off bout, I'd bet on Monzon edging a close 15-Rounder.

It's a really fine line between them and I wouldn't argue too much with those backing Hagler. But, given I can't see this failing to go the full 15 rounds, and that I see Monzon as the more consummate 15-round campaigner, I'm inclined to stick with Monzon in this one.
