I really enjoyed the Roger Mayweather fight....don't know if it was his "best" ..but he fought aggressively while still maintaining a frustrating defense and I thought enjoyed it....total whitewash for Whitaker!
I chose the Azumah Nelson win but I would also like to note that his first victory over Buddy McGirt was top notch.
Most entertaining for me it was his fight with Roger Mayweather. Best performance there's quite a few you can choose cause Pea put on some boxing masterclasses but I'll go with the second fight with Jose Luis Ramirez.
The McGirt rematch is probably my favourite. Haugen I and Ramirez II would also be up there. Pineda is an underrated performance as well.
Ramirez 2 that was the fight where i felt like Whitaker finally entered his prime, the 1st Ramirez fight Whitaker was still a bit green. And i feel like Whitaker losing that fight was a blessing in disguise, yes it was a robbery but it made Whitaker a better fighter. Plus Whitaker was scheduled to fight Chavez after the 1st Ramirez and he wasn't ready for Chavez at that point.
Incredible effort in holding even an over ideal weight, shopworn Chavez to a draw. Really deserves accolades for that one.
As some have noted Whitaker had a handful of excellent performances...One of my favorites believe it or not was his fight against DIsobely Hurtado , a fight where he proved he could grind down an opponent though he was clearly past prime, best fighting weight , and behind on the score cards. The fights where he looked his best at his best fighting weights (Lightweight/jr.welter) Were both the Ramirez fights, a blind could see he won the 1st fight, though he coasted a little at the end of it. The 2nd fight against Ramirez was a white washing. Both fights against the skilled Buddy McGirt who was a top 10 fighter in the early 90's who doesn't get the respect he deserves. Azumah Nelson, while it was true Nelson was past his prime and best fighting weight, I really don't believe it would've mattered much anyway. Whitaker was simply a bad stylistic match up for him, even in his prime. Rodger Mayweather, a very early fight in Whitakers career, again he performed brilliantly against him.
