i wouldnt say it means nothing, but you can only get so good, or reach a certain level, then the rest needs to be learned and experienced in the pros. its a different intensity, techniques and intent in the pros.
like that kid from cali that fought on the undercard last night. if i heard correctly, he was in his 10th fight, and had only 10 amateur fights, and already fighting in a 10 rounder...and looking complete. maybe i heard wrong, but if its true, thats astonishing and this kid is super special. born boxer, as natural as nature makes em.
edit- just heard him say it was only 9 amateur fights. 9. unbelievable.

 

I thought that was his most exciting bout for a while. No reason to retire, he doesn't beat Bivol but beats everyone else.

 

I understand the concept of hating when athletes go out on top and, like you, I love the great turn back the clock performance. The only sport where I have different feelings about this is boxing. Given the long term health risks I don't have a problem when someone retires on or near the top if that is their desire. That being said, that does not happen very often. Most great fighters need incontrovertible proof that they have faded before they retire.

I don't want Canelo to retire and I am sure that is not his plan. He has the Bivol rematch and possible fights against Benavidez and Morrell that will make him a lot of money and keep fans interested. One thing you can say about Alvarez is that, compared to almost all of the other top fighters of his era, he challenges himself with good opposition.

 

He is past his best, but not by much. He still has a few top level fights left in him and it will be more about how much money and how many challenges he wants to take on before retiring. Not like there are so many top contenders either.

 

You know things are not looking good when even your promoter Eddie Hearns is forced into admitting that Canelo didn't really that good and that the next fight will tell whether father time has indeed caught up.

Sure he didn't look a million dollars last night but there's still so many big fights he can deliver which people wanna see him in.....plus for himself he's got a whole load more $$$$ to make.

 

No. He's 32 yrs old FFS and makes 20-40 million $ per fight.

And....his lifestyle is ridiculously high; he's spending money on horses, cars, houses like JohnnyDepp or M.C. Hammer. He NEEDS to keep fighting otherwise he may end up shining shoes at the Mexico DF airport.

Doubt it. Investments. Canelo doesn't seem like the guy that will go broke.

 

hes got options other then bivol and benevidez which i dont see him winning legit.

 

Like Fury/Mayweather etc do you think Canelo could implement an effective style change? Where he relies less on his power?

 

Let him fight again Bivol and if he loses then let him retire...
