An idea here...is Fury afraid of the cut re-opening?

Absolutely. A cut that deep will always be prone to reopen. Usyk is faster, busier and more accurate than Wallin. Fury knows that not only he could lose on points but the middleweight can TKO him too.

The biggest sign of how afraid he is of Usyk was when he rejected the 60/40 to the winner deal against Usyk. That’s not a fighter who wants the fight. If anything was true of the Gypsy King act, he would have taken it in a heartbeat. Hell, he could have gone “you know what, middleweight, name whatever percentage to the winner you want 60, 80, 100, it doesn’t matter because you will never beat me - I know it, I could take you on right now, you have no chance, no matter the circumstances”. After all, it’s easy money, right? Splattering a little rabbit to become the first undisputed in the four belt era, and a fat pay cheque to boot with the easiest fight ever.

If anything, Furyette vassals should have press on the ogre to accept any deals. But even Peter Fury confirmed it multiple times how dangerous Usyk is.

 

He has spent his career preparing for big punchers with lower skill sophistication.

He's hoping that a guy like Dubois or Wilder will get lucky and catch Usyk so he can fight them for the title.

Even if they don't win, they are putting lots of miles on Usyk's odometer.

I think Wilder 3 took a lot out of him physically and mentally. He started complaining about headaches and being scared of having brain damage. Once fighters start worrying about their long term health the end isn’t far off.

 

Fury knows his foot speed and movement is on the decline.
Whyte had lead in his boots and Fury moved easily against him but it was a lot slower than he was for Wilder 2. You can't keep going up and down in weight and not get cought eventually.
Not really sure what his plan is here. Ruiz would have been an OK fight as would AJ.... both would have generated money but he seems content to get fat and get back on the gear.
He wont have long left treating his body like that...this year has been a total lost cause for him really. Whyte was acceptable but Chisora was a complete joke and since then his talking and inability to a make a decent fight have made him look a bit of a looser.

I don't think anyone would hold it against him if he lost by cut stoppage. On the contrary, it would be a good built in excuse if he happened to be losing the fight at the time.
