Don't what era would look good if judged by a fight between two C or D level fighters.

I think there's certainly ability in today's scene, but Fury's outright ducking is ruining it all.

They were saying the same thing in the 90's though, now seen as one of the deepest and best heavyweight eras.

This era is fine, and let's hope that planned 'super showdown' happens in Saudi Arabia in December.

The fighters need to stop being divas and fight each other, and fight more often though.

I concur,Bokaj. Fury, along with Usyk,is the most talented of heavies out there at the moment but he needs to make up his mind as to whether he wants to be a world champion boxer or a media star.

1990’s had Tyson, Bowe, Moorer, Lewis, Mercer, Tua, Foreman. And maybe a few I forgot. Not bad for that period leading into the 00’s. Maybe this era will be looked at differently in the future. But you gotta admit that it is **** poor. Seen that footage on YouTube with Lennox teaching Wilder how to throw a jab? For ****s sakes, a retired champion teaching the reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion how to throw a jab.

There is no harm in letting a great fighter like Lewis show you his technique. That's not to say Wilder can't throw a jab, but I'm sure as boxers do, they were sharing techniques and talking about it.
Lennox himself asked Holmes to show him his jab, though I think Lennox was just making small talk when hanging out with Larry.
I mean, if you think this era is bad, well okay. I won't try to persuade you otherwise. We just see things a bit differently.
It could be better, but then again, with but a few exceptions, the division could historically always have been better.
I think there are some nice matchups if the fights can be made.

Can’t argue with that. But as for fights not being made how the hell do we oldies if we’re still around in 10-20-30 years time decide exactly who the hell was True/Lineal, whatever anyone wishes to call it, Champion? Take out the alphabet groups, and Lineal title. Who the hell do we say was THE MAN?

Most of talk like this is rose tinted glasses

Let's do the 90's HW scene.

It starts with the greatest upset ever. That's always good, but then the new champion seems to almost leave walk over in his first defence. Well, ok, at least Holy looked good and now we had everything set up for a big showdown with Tyson.

But that never happens, instead Holy makes one of the most uninspired string of defences of any champion. I mean, just imagine the uproar today if the undisputed champion's two best successful defences are against former champs in their 40's, and sandwiched in between he gets into bad trouble against the second alternate of the guy he was meant two face.

So a pretty stuttering start to the decade to say the least, but then comes one of the great showdowns in HW history against someone who really looks the goods. But instead of the start of a great new reign, we get reminded of what a carefully managed way to the title the new champion has had when he shamelessly ducks the top contender to instead face someone who was a belt holder almost a decade earlier.

This place would have a ****ing meltdown.

Then Holy retakes his championship in a fight that's not as exciting as the first one, but still high quality. Ok, pretty good. Except that he loses it when defending against a former LHW champ. He in turn gets chinned by a guy who lost his title 20 years earlier.

Imagine the shitstorm here if something like that happened today. The era would be looked upon as a total joke.

The new old champion ducks everyone and everything that's breathing and makes a mockery out of his championship. Focus is instead turned to Tyson who makes his long awaited return. Against two D level guys to start with, but his destruction of Bruno (who really shouldn't be holding a belt in a strong era, though) stirs some true excitement. But then he shits on that to duck Lewis and instead face first Seldon and then Holy, that was seen as pretty much washed up at the time.

Holy wins in a great upset and some life starts to come back to the division, but it still takes almsot another three years for a fight for the undisputed and that ends with one of the greatest robberies ever. Justice is finally done in the rematch, but that is a pretty tepid showing in which Lewis, who already has been stopped by the unremarkable McCall, fails to really impress against the old and shopworn Holyfield.

And there ends the decade. Yes, some good challengers out there which possibly could bode well for the future, but still think that most here would feel that the decade as such mainly had been disappointing.

I will say, for the most part, that this is very much how I remember the era being interpreted at the time by most of the boxing publications. There’s a lot of revisionist history and nostalgia (I’m definitely guilty of that) with regards to the 90s…Old George especially is benefiting from a much more positive interpretation these days. I rooted for Holyfield but even that became difficult when he was struggling past Foreman, Holmes and Cooper (!). I don’t think Tyson Fury’s reign is that dissimilar to Bowe’s…might be slightly better.

I'd say Fury's wins over Wlad and Wilder, with no losses, makes his resume stronger than Bowe's, but, yes, his career is also well on the path to being unfulfilled potential.

Most of what you said is factual but i'd much rather watch fights like Bowe vs Holyfield, Lewis vs Mercer, Tua vs Ibeabuchi, Ruddock vs Tyson, Cooper vs Moorer, from 90s era. Than rewatch any of the current Heavyweight fights in the past few years.

Maybe it's because the Heavyweights today are all giants and more lumbering except for Usyk, but the Heavyweights back then had better fights. There was more exchanges, more combinations, more passion, i dunno that's just how i see it.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Fury-Wilder 3 was exciting, but low on skill. AJ-Wlad is the one who comes closest to some of the epic 90's fights and that's more than six years ago. High skill level in both Usyk-AJ fights, I think, but not that level of excitement.

    Brezeale--Izu, Kownacki--Arreola, Ruiz--Joshua I, Wilder--Ortiz 1, Dubois--Larena, Whyte--Povetkin I, Kabayel--Smkici, Arreola--Stiverne II, Wilder--Szpilka, Fury--Wilder I & III.

    All were good.

Yeah, there's been good fights. But probably fewer epic ones.

Those fights were good, I'd add Povetkin - Takam, about as good as heavyweight fights get. I don't remember seeing either of them in a bad fight. Wilder's fights are exciting, they can end at anytime. Guys like Charles Martin are not fan favorites on this board, but he is still a 6'6", 250 pound southpaw, not many people in history would want to fight him. In a lot of previous eras he would either have turned around and fought conventionally or he wouldn't have fought at all. Today he gets fights.
