A wall pulley is an exercise device consisting of two pulleys mounted on a wall or an upright frame, with a wire from a hand grip extending over each pulley and down to a weight. By pulling on the hand grip, the weight would be lifted off the floor. In film of Jack Dempsey using the device, he stood in a boxing stance with his back to the wall, holding a grip in each hand and extending his arms in a punching motion. In this way, the resistance of the weights would be applied throughout the range of motion of his arms and body as he went through the punching motion. Since the weights were relatively light, he was able to do this in a quick, rhythmic way over a period of time. This would allow him to increase the strength and stamina of his body for punching without becoming over developed or "muscle bound," which might occur if he used a technique dedicated simply to lifting a heavy weight.
