I need to watch the fight but how the hell did Jerry Quarry knock Earnie Shavers the ---- out in the first round ? I know the transitive argument doesn't work in sports but Earnie went the distance with Ali and Holmes.

Quarry basically saw an opportunity to unload with a barrage on Earnie and never let him off the hook

Maybe a controversial opinion, but I’ve never really bought into the idea of boxers having objective attributes like chins, power etc.like you see in video games. I think the sport is really about throwing and landing the right punches, the right way, at the right time on the night. Quarry did exactly that.

Watch the fight. Quarry timed him with a right hand as Earnie was throwing a right; that is a real gunslinger move but pretty safe if you get your body turned over your left leg.

Good point. I mean, in our own day to day lives, we know our own "resilience" from one day to the next isn't perfectly static.

Not to take any credit away from Jerry, but I wonder how well Earnie trained for the Quarry fight. Mucho credit to Earnie - he def. made no excuses after the fact. He simply said he got caught cold.

I'll just say, proper training and conditioning are probably more often and more strongly linked to stamina - but conditioning, or lack thereof, can also affect how well or how badly a fighter takes a punch on any given occasion.

Quarry holds the highly creditable distinction of putting Earnie out early and emphatically - most other stoppage/KO losses for Earnie came after he well and truly emptied his cannons and was heavily fatigued from his own exertions. As @swagdelfadeel has said before, Earnie's whiskers cop a worse rap than deserved. Did I get that right, Swag and is the cheque in the mail.

I'm kidding of course, I genuinely agree on the excellent points you've previously made re Shavers' chin. And, just as seriously, the cheque really is in the mail this time, right?

The last one you promised never arrived. Co-incidentally, @JohnThomas1 said he never got his last payment either - notably, after he threw you a bone re Cleveland Williams. Wassup wit dat?

 All good from my end but I don’t know how The Don, JT might feel. Things can get pretty ugly when he decides to call in outstanding debts.
