Yes that was a great performance, after a dodgy start, no doubt at all.
But I suppose the glory of defeating the ATG Napoles in his own backyard swings it for me.

Good to see you back here MDWC.

I don’t know if you recollect but me and you had a disagreement about the Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society álbum. I said it was not that good, you said it was. I gave it a re-listen and you were right and I was wrong. An absolutely fantastic album and one of my favourites now. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking the first time I listened to it. It didn’t resonate but it sure does now! I owe you an apology for that one mate. Your taste was impeccable.

Calzaghe vs Lacy was a sublime performance….it was like he was trying to win every minute of every round.
Another performance that I always admired was Naseem Hamed winning the European Bantamweight title from Vincenzo Belcastro in his 12th pro fight aged 20. I thought Naz was better at Bantam than Feather, and this was a solid 12 round decision over a very experienced pro, all done in his brash, unconventional style.

Lewis was also past his best aswell didn't both Napoles and Lewis retire after losing to Stracey ? i know Stracey's team seriously underrated Palomino. Probably due to Palomino drawing with Lewis they thought Stracey was on a different level to Palomino they thought wrong.

Oh it's the better win, no doubts. Maybe it's just because when I first spoke to John (in Asda of all places), he seemed really pleased I mentioned that fight first*, in a kinda "no one mentions that one, way" and the fact the Eddie Futch compared him to Henry Armstrong afterwards too. High cotton indeed.

    * Same when we met Shavers when he was working in town (Liverpool city centre) and we talked about the Norton/Ellis KOs, he said "great that people remember some of my wins too" :D

    Great picks Blofeld.

Others have already mentioned Turpin's victory over SRR.

I'll add 3 x wins by Jimmy Wilde. Wilde was a <105lbs Minimumweight by modern weight division standards. He holds wins over a top 15 all time BW Joe Lynch, top 10 all time BW Memphis Pal Moore and remarkably over the 20lbs heavier ranked FW contender Joe Conn.

Can you imagine the justifiable outrage today if, for example, Knockout CP Freshmart signed to fight Josh Warrington at 126lbs followed by Inoue at 118lbs? Thankfully such fights would never be sanctioned. Which gives you an idea of the ridiculous scale of Wilde's achievements.

I don’t get calling Kirkland Laing vs. Roberto Duran a great performance.

It’s a nice name on his resume but my memory is all he did was run like he was trying to beat Roger Bannister’s 4-minute mile against a fat, unmotivated opponent and flick out a jab here and there. Hardly a time capsule performance.

He outboxed one of the greatest fighters of all time who would go on to have great performances vs the likes of Hagler, Moore, Barkley, etc. Yes it may not of been a boxing master class but in the context of the victory it rates very highly regarding top wins for a British fighter.

David Lemiuex was a more formidable opponent than Jeff Lacy and had the better left hook .

Ray Davies, man just so good.

I was just listening to Celluloid Heroes the other day. It brought me to tears and I’m still not sure exactly why.

One of the very best songwriters ever.

Always loved John Conteh's performance against Jorge Ahumada where it looked like he had given ground after 10 rounds and then went into the next gear down the stretch. Also his one-handed performance against Yaqui Lopez wasn't too shabby either. Another one I liked was Henry Cooper against Jose Urtain. Urtain was such a huge KO artist, but Cooper wrecked the Urtain mythos with a 9th round stoppage. And he did that at the age of 36.

The kinks are the greatest UK rock band in this yanks opinion.

Greatest performance by a UK fighter?

Honeyghan vs curry. No explanation needed.

Lewis vs grant. Sure grant turned out to not be a great lewis snuffing out the big hope for American hw boxing like that was quite a statement
