No chance whatsoever. As we all know technique was invented in 1960 by Muhammad Ali, before then boxers were mere brute cavemen. Hide in 1, 2 if he feels merciful
Joe Louis should win by KO or stoppage. Might get hit with some Hard shots though. Louis was still very young and not in the pros that long when he fought Baer and Primo. And hide for all his shortcomings hit very hard, was in great shape and even somewhat mobile
Hide might surprise Louis with his speed early on and maybe scores a flash knockdown but after that Louis eats him alive within 4 rounds.
This is a dangerous fight for Joe. Herbie might well be the best blend of speed and power Joe faced, outside of Ezzard Charles. Not many will have hit harder - the Baer brothers, Schmeling, Galento, maybe - and only Conn and Pastor would be able to match Hide for mobility, based on what I read about them. At the risk of running Classic's wrath, I would have Herbie in Joe's top 5 wins, easily.
Anyway to answer the question…Does Joe stand a chance? He’d be the favourite if only because of Herbie’s terrible stage fright and less than iron chin. I could actually see both of them hitting the deck at different stages in a 5 round extravaganza with one of them…most likely Herbie…staying down for the 10 count.
That Joe Louis was still green, so I'm not sure. But IMO peak Joe Louis Vs. peak Herbie Hide - Joe Louis wins.
