Face facts, Rocky Marciano is the greatest heavyweight champ head to head.

He's not even in the top 200 best head to head heavies. I pick a guy like Povetkin to destroy him.

You can't be short, truncated, slow, light, have limited boxing skills and beat the sort of heavies who have been around the past 35 years.

 

You know, I gave ‘Vander some heavy consideration - in literal “head to head” terms, he certainly never came off second best during his career.

We know Butt Boy tore Rahman a new one (head that is).

A new born Kuato emanating from Hasim’s forehead that instantly told him his (mis)fortune.

But then, Rocky knew how to use his noggin also - he was the complete package as a fighter.

So I have to eliminate ‘Vander as any kind of potential threat also.

 

People often water down Rocky’s see ya later left on the downed Walcott - but that was a shot on an already completely short circuited fighter.

The lights were out and there was absolutely no rigidity in Jersey Joe’s neck muscles to prevent a exponentially compounding brain swish - such additional punches can be quite dangerous.

 

Coming up in the modern era at 5'10" with a 67" reach, I doubt any gym would have trained him to become a Heavyweight. Even LHW would be pushing it.

With the way boxers today are expected to cut weight as well, he'd probably be pushed to fight at MW likely. This is not taking away what he actually did do in his era of course.

 

I’d have to have another look Demps - though I do recall claims that Walcott’s knee wasn’t quite down - but then again, he was hanging lifeless on the ropes - the only things keeping him up - which I think constitutes a KD - I also think the ref was moving in or almost between them when Rocky threw that last punch - so I think the ref at least considered Walcott technically down. But again, I’d have to review it to properly refresh.

And that I think is the exact reason that fighters from greatly different eras should only be pitted against one another in light-hearted conversation.

If fighters were from (and fighting) in another era, they simply wouldn't be THAT fighter anymore.

Look, fighters are judged by what they accomplish IN THEIR OWN TIME, and Marciano retired 49-0 with with an absolutely nuts 88% knockout ratio. He beat legends Joe Louis, Ezzard CharlesX2, Joe WalcottX2, and Archie Moore. He beat top contenders Don Cockel, Harry Matthews, Rex Layne, and Roland LaStarzaX 2. He beat former contenders Lee Savold, Tom Shkor, Bernie Reynolds and Phil Muscato.

He had an excellent chin with only two flash knockdowns. He developed his own style which used two-fisted power, a low attack, and insane stamina to compensate for lack of height and reach, and due to his legendary training dedication, he could throw 95 punches in the fifteenth round of a fight.

Were Louis, Charles, Walcott and Moore at their best? No.
Was it an era of huge, dreadnaught heavies? No.
Would we like to have seen him fight a big man like Nino Valdez? Sure.

But the bottom line is, the haters can hate. What he accomplished was truly remarkable. Him and Lewis are tied as my #3 heavy.
