I've seen Usyk hurt to the body a few times in his career, not surprising since hes fighting giants now but has he ever been hurt by a punch to the head? The closest example that comes to mind is the Gassiev fight, a the end of round 5-6 where he got caught with a collosal hook to the chin and was clearly hurt and went to grab Gassiev the second it landed. Any other examples?
His chin is iron and the fact he hasn't been dropped or badly hurt by a head shot given the murderer's row of punchers he's fought, both amateur/WSB and pro, many being much bigger than him too, is pretty amazing. Buzzed, rocked even, felt the weight of a shot, yes but I've never seen him on wobbly legs, knees dip, close to going down or hurt or in big trouble. Gassiev caught him with a huge right hand that slipped between his guard at the end of the round which rocked him a bit but wasn't badly hurt by it and it was freaking Gassiev for goodness sake.
He wasn't punch to body shot as well. Every single shot he was "hurt" was by being lowblow or on the hip area, which is illegal and 2 time on the side in the amateur by Beterbiev, which in amateur is illegal as well. ATG the most clean athlete on the planet. Never used even one dirty trick to take advantage. Look at every other top Champion in the HW, they all have used dirty tricks and illegal tactics here and there, Usyk never !!!
OK let's do this Current fighters hurt or dropped by head shots Let's start with the P4P top 10 Crawford - both Inoue - no Usyk - no Clenelo - hurt once Bivol - hurt once Spence - both, hurt numerous times Haney - hurt Twink - no Teofimo - down numerous times Loma - dropped once Other current champs, former champs or contenders Belly - both many times The Dosser - both many times AJ - both many times Fat Andy - both numerous times Badou Jack - both, numerous times Opetaia - not sure. Briedis hurt him a bit but his jaw was badly broken Goulamirian - not as far as I'm aware CBS - hurt, 1 bogus KD Okolie - both Makabu - both Dorticos - both Briedis - no. He backed off in pain against Opetaia but that was after a vicious flush uppercut shattered his nose Beterbiev - both Gvozdyk - both Joe Smith - both Yarde - both Zurdo - both I think. Might be wrong Dirrell - both I can keep going but you get the picture Now factor in how many big punchers or KO artists they've fought Some have barely fought any, let alone their size Some have barely fought any and been hurt or dropped by light-average punchers Some have fought one or two and been dropped by them Some have fought lots, many bigger than them, and only been dropped or hurt once Some have been stopped or knocked out. Numerous times even Usyk has fought loads of them, more so than any of them or any other current champ I can think of off the top of my head, including many of the biggest punchers in the sport, and never been dropped by a head shot and he's fought many who are much bigger than him too
That's true. I've never seen Usyk do anything dirty that I can recall. That's probably why he gets pissed when other fighters do that with him.
Forgot about that. Yeah a bit. Definitely buzzed and rocked but to be fair, despite the fact he hasn't fought many punchers, that was a monster flush shot from a legit KO artist and if a shot like that doesn't at the very least have that kind of effect on you you're probably not human. Also, he ate a lot of good shots before that and leading up to that moment and he was compromised by a fractured orbital socket and broken nose so I'm actually really impressed by his toughness there, and even more so because he looks like a FTM K-pop star.
Thanks. It's a confusing one for me because I have this feeling I've seen him dropped in one of his early fights but I might be mixing him up with someone else. It might be the other Mexican SMW Marco Antonio Periban
Beterbiev hurt him to the head twice in their 2nd fight, especially in round 2 with a right hand iirc.
FTM tough guy I say he hasn't fought many punchers but to be fair I'm not familiar with some of those leprechaun children he fought at his first few weights. I suspect they probably aren't big punchers or at least not most of them. But that first fight against Nonito is a good example of a fighter proving their chin in a single fight
After the WSB 10 years ago (Man I can’t believe it’s been that long) I knew Usyk had a good set of whiskers on him. He took some sharp shots from Nistor and Joyce both. Didn’t even flinch. And after the Gassiev fight and a couple of the rockets he took there… it was a done deal on Usyk’s chin. Guy has an iron one. I think it’s a combo of just good genetics in that area and the fact he stays VERY alert in there and sees everything coming
