In my time watching boxing (around 30 years) in my opinion Scott Harrison has been the best Scottish boxer. He was a world champion in what was at the time the strongest division in the world over the last 30 years. He certainly never fulfilled his potential because of personal issues. Was huge at weight but he had better footwork than anyone i can think of in the UK (since I have been watching boxing.) I would urge anyone to watch some of his old fights and watch how he would subtly move his feet and maneuver his opponent into position. He never had the fastest feet, but he would move his feet a few inches nearer to his opponent at a time. I think his opponents generally never noticed and often wondered how he was suddenly on their chest and had them were he wanted them.

 

His footwork was decent but he was nae Nijinsky.Taylor and burns are better movers imo.

 

Footwork nowhere near as good (especially Burns.)

 

I don’t remember 126 being that much of a formidable division at the time he had a belt? Let alone in the last 30 years too. A year or so earlier than when Harrison was boxing, 147 was formidable with Whitaker, Trinidad, Quartey as champions and de la Hoya stepping up to join them, but cannot recall the same for 126. Who was there that makes you say that?

 

When Harrison beat Chacon to win the title, as number 1 contender, Barrera, Marquez and Naz were 2,3,4 in WBO Rankings. Also in division at the time were Injin Chi, Michael Brodie, Wayne McCulloch, Juan Manuel Medina, Chris John, Derrick Gainer, Johnny Tapia. The depth was insane. Furthermore shortly after winning the title Pacman moved up to the division too.

 

Ok hear you with Barrera, Naz, JJM and John, thanks for the update, but not apart from the 2 past it Britons on the that list he never got close to boxing any of the others.

I always thought once he lost to Medina, Maloney was never going to put him in with the iron. He also never boxed a live opponent in their prime. Tough man though, no doubt.

 

Remember Harrison spent his prime years in prison

 

He destroyed Medina in the rematch 3 months later. Billy Nelson has said on here I think that Harrison was having the runs in the changing room before first fight. JMM amd Harrison went to purse bids and when Warren won it JMM pulled out (JMM was interim Champ and Harrison full champ.) I think Harrison at the time he won the title and his first few defences would have held his own with the top ones at the time. Obviously later in his run of defences he wasn't as good (when his personal life was spiralling out of control.) People forget he beat an excellent fighter in Chacon to win the world title.
