I won't call this the best but it was a good one to add to the mix. Mark Breland went 110-1 as an amateur, losing only to Darryl Anthony. After the Olympics with a gold medal around his neck, Breland had unfinished business knowing there was only one man out there, ever, who took his measure. 5 years later they met as pros. Anthony, with a record of 20-2-2 and having won his last 8 in a row finally gave Breland his long-awaited rematch. Clearly with the Breland train rolling they had to offer Anthony a pretty penny to put his head on the chopping block. But the Breland camp got what they wanted and knocked Anthony kicking in 3 rounds.
Lots of good ones here already mentioned. Leonard-Duran II. When you consider Duran's reputation up to that point, for someone to come back and make the great Duran quit was crazy. Nobody ever expected that. That fight, in addition to the Hearns blowout took a chunk out of Duran's tough guy mystique. Terry Norris-Simon Brown II. Brown upset Norris the first time by KO, a fight that even had Brown showing off a bit. In the rematch, Norris was on fire just outboxed the hell out of him and really embarrassed him in the process.
Buster Douglas on Don King. Don tried to get him stripped of his title and had the WBC on board with it, but Big Bus went to court and got himself freed from King’s shackles. Fought Holyfield and lost but Don never, ever got to make the rematch with Tyson that would have been like printing $$$.
Most Significant: Louis vs Schmeling II Greatest Win: Leonard vs Duran II My Favourite: Charles vs Marshall II
I would say Louis vs Schmeling II - 1) purely in its own right and 2) for its historical significance. More in line with my own era, I would say Lewis vs Rahman 2. Lewis didn’t suffer the substantive beat down that Louis did the first time around and Lewis was more obviously under par. - but after such a devastating one punch defeat in the first fight, his performance, mentally and physically, was nonetheless stunning.
That’s a very good one actually. Revenge by proxy. I won’t derail the thread but there’s a few other examples in that particular realm.
