Roy spams the check left hook over Calzaghes Jab and the sweeping right to his stomach all night. Roy by UD, stoppage if Calzaghe gets too feisty. Prime Roy wasnt 2003, it wasnt even 2001, it was 94-99
Calzaghe was a problem for Jones in many ways not least that he was as fast and twitchy as Jones was and maybe more. RJJ makes it closer but I still fancy Zaggers on points.
Roy. Too precise, athletic, and calculated. If there is a style to trouble him though, it would be the combination of granite chin, ceaseless aggression, and unending stamina, so who knows. Calzaghe did had some of those.
I thought Jones was at his very best at super middle…reflexes, speed, power, unconventional style…I’d pick him against anyone.
He wasn’t faster than Roy. Roy had faster hands, feet and reflexes. If Joe was going to beat Roy, his best bet would have been to have tried to have dragged him into a shootout. I wouldn’t have fancied his chances, but he’d have had a better chance of catching him, than beating him on points. The main issue for Joe, would have been his level of confidence. How confident, and how offensive and aggressive would he realistically have been? Joe would not pursue the fight back then. We also have statements from him saying that he wasn’t chasing him, and that he doesn’t know if he could have beaten him when he was in his prime. There’s also an interview that I’ve just listened to with Frank Warren and Simon Jordan. And Frank talks about the Lacy fight. He talks about Joe’s Dad, Enzo, ringing him up and asking him to talk him into fighting Lacy, as he wanted to withdraw from the fight. He and Enzo both had to talk Joe into taking that fight. And Joe wasn’t injured. Because I’ve heard Enzo say that it doesn’t matter who Joe was facing and how much money it was for, if he was injured badly where it could affect the outcome of the fight, he just wouldn’t let him go through with it, no matter what the consequences were. So Joe had severe confidence issues with Lacy. He had self doubt. So if he was having doubts about fighting Lacy, then what would he have thought about fighting a prime version of Roy Jones? How would he have approached the fight? Personally, I don’t think that he had the confidence or the defence to have been favoured over Roy.
A lot of people have discussed this over the years, and many people think that it would have been a great fight. But I’ve always thought that if it had’ve happened, that it may have been quite uneventful, with both guys having being quite cautious.
Calzaghe was an excellent fighter, but Roy was well, Roy. Since there’s been an 168 lb. division, there’s no one I’d pick over the RJJ of 94-96. Roy by decision, taking 8-9 rounds
This could be a draw. Jones won 8-4 over a fairly inactive Hopkins. I see Calzaghe giving him a lot more problems with speed and unorthodox angles. Plus, in his prime, he still had power in both fists. A great fight, but too close to call. 114-114
Once again, I am going to be the one to point out the obvious. Roy Jones failed a PEDs test for androstenedione, and it was hushed up. HIs "talent" appeared to be too good to be true, because it was. As PEDs testing progressed in the boxing world, we saw a massive, unbelievable decline of his talent. If both are well tested, Calzaghe wins. Also, Calzaghe is only three years younger, and had chronic hand problems to boot when they fought, so it is not like there was some massive, unfair advantage to Joe.
