Nice explanation of Rummy. I noticed a clover in the rivalry. This punch is much more below the belt than some recent ones; controversial. This content is protected
Thanks for the memories Rummy. Back then nobody was labelling Tyson a 6/7 round fighter like many label him retrospectively…and wrongly in my opinion…today. Going 12 rounds with the dangerous and…at the time…durable Ruddock was not seen as a huge deal for Tyson back then. After all it was the 5th time he’d seen the final bell so in reality Tyson actually had no problem fighting 12 rounds. Both fighters displayed incredible stamina and punch resistance…something people seem to forget when putting Tyson up against fighters from the past in fantasy battles. That well worn mantra is heard far too often…”If Mike doesn’t stop them by Round 7 he loses heart.” Well this video seems to show the opposite. What I do agree with though because facts are facts, is that if a boxer gets to Round 8 against prime Mike Tyson…the chances are they’ll last the distance because Mike has only had one stoppage victory after the 8th I believe. I don’t call that losing heart though, more like losing a bit of the early firepower as some tiredness creeps in I’d say. Nothing too damaging generally though (except against Douglas of course) because statistics show if you last the distance against prime Mike, you still get beaten anyway. Unanimously.
Rarely do you see that many hard knockout blows land for 12 rounds. Especially considering how clean all of those shots landed. Both of them were just throwing as hard as they could the second fight. It would be like lyle and shavers trading for 12 rounds. Those things usually dont last long.
Ruddock was kind of the perfect guy for Tyson, after Buster. He had to prove himself and that's what he did. Say what you will about RR, he was at that stage one of the most feared heavyweight s in the world. Yet Tyson went head to head and took some massive shots, proving still had to be taken seriously.
I always felt like the early stoppage in the 1st fight was beneficial to Ruddock, because he was losing pretty badly outside of 6th round. And was definitely going to be stopped legitimately after 1 or 2 more punches, although Steele did stop it prematurely in a way it helped Ruddock. As he was able to pack on weight for rematch and be more competitive.
Good fights but at the time I was concerned that Tyson was not moving his head and was trading shots ! This was the new Tyson
Thx Rummy! Underrated wars and I love to reference them in regards of Tyson having a game opponent. I think they took their toll bcuz Tyson wasn't impressive again until Bruno 2 imho tho tbf he already beat him. Ofc all of this is after the Douglas upset but after Stewart, these n Bruno 2 Tyson wasn't "Dynamite" as he was once referred as. Good stuff!
Razor was dropped in the second and fourth round and was also deducted a point. Tyson was deducted three points. @Rumsfeld " It provided for a bit of an unusual mathematical situation" 113- 109 114- 108 114- 108 Awesome breakdown and great video!
