Ernie Bewick it’s Bewick by the way not Berwick is a lovely fella, I know you tend to hear that about these men when they’re not but in his case it’s true. Never seen him kick off but I have it on good authority from people I know that he’s the real deal and all done with a minimum of fuss. The thing is around Sunderland he wasn’t called into action that much because his reputation alone dampened situations.
I’ve been hoping for a book or a podcast for a long time now. But I guess that he’s a very private person. I read his account of fighting Billy Robinson. I can’t believe that he just turned up by himself. I bet they couldn’t believe it.
From what I've seen none of these guys really fight under anything like LPR, its probbaly closer to modern boxer than to LPR despite being bareknuckle. I saw a channel called American Prize Ring, where it seemed like someone was putting on fights under conditions based off of LPR, but from what I've seen the American bareknuckle scene is pretty different from the British one.
That's my guy. I rate him the best of the bare knucklers. Matter of fact so does Tyson Fury for what it's worth
I got to give credit where credit is due .. and I remember a while back in that other thread , you gave me a quick education on him as I know you have been following him for a long time now .. thanks again man
Yes he went through there on his own no fear. He’s simply the type who can’t be intimidated, apparently he’s faced shooters down. He’s still around and will be well into his 60’s now basically living a quiet life, a very well respected fella in Sunderland.
Thread revival re the St Leger Massacre... I heard Bob Gaskin was shot sometime later, I'm not really sure he was regarded as a top fighting man though. Danny Shenton from Doncaster was regarded as a very tough man back them and known all over the north was there that day. I've heard possibly to fight Bartley or Bartleys brother. There's also talk Shenton was there to ensure fair play, he was a very capable man himself my stepfather who could have a fight knew him and said he was so powerful and strong it was unreal. Jamie Boyle has approached Shentons family regards a book but he just wants a peaceful life now by the sounds of it and has declined.
I’ve heard that Danny Shenton was a very tough man. According to Bartley, he was supposedly there to fight his brother, Sam. I love Jamie’s books. I’ve got many of them. I’d love to read Danny’s story. But it’s understandable that he wants a peaceful life. I’d also love to read books on Henry Francis and Ernie Bewick. A friend of mine knew Henry in the 90’s, when he used to spend time around the Dinnington area.
On one of the boxrec pages there's a post by someone saying he witnessed the leger day beating that Gorman got and says he dropped Danny at the hospital the next day and Danny and Gorman made their peace.
