Suge, surely you don't believe any of the **** in this post ? If you do, your grasp of the sweet science is severely limited, and you should probably switch to ultimate fighting or some other such foolishness. Hagler won IMO, but Leonard could not be expected to go toe-to-toe with the bigger stronger Marvin. The ring is of finite size, and even at 20 feet, if a guy knows his business and cuts it off, no-one can run from him. Different fighters employ different tactics. Otherwise it's just street-fighting. Should Floyd have brawled with Baldo ?
It's not called toe-to-toe, and perhaps you should review real defensive fighting specialists...I didn't expect Ray to stand there and get ran over, I expected him to box and defend. Winky Wright James Toney Bernard Hopkins ...off the top of my head, 3 boxers who defend without running away. ...and since you brought up Baldo, FLOYD sold that fight by saying we are going to see him come to fight, and go for the knockout. He lied, excuse it however you want. When he talked this fan listened, and I held him accountable. I haven't purchased a Floyd fight since, I'll only watch them on replay.
Just rewatched it and changed my initial scorecard from 114-114 to 116-112 Hagler. I gave more credit to Hagler's damaging body shots this time with Hagler winning rounds 3,5, 7, 8,9,10,11 and 12 Leonard winning rounds 1,2 4, 6. There were some close rounds as the 3rd, 7th and 11th but in all cases Hagler did enough to retain his title.
It was very close. Could have gone either way. Hagler was NOT sharp in that fight, though. He really lost his fastball and Leonard knew it.:smoke :smoke
Leonard was kind of tricky in there and that was an amazing performance after such a long layoff. Leonard put on a good show but Hagler's punches were more effective especially his bodyshots. Leonard was oftentimes hurt to the body and constantly holding on.
The words "outboxed" and "outsmarted" should be banned from this thread. Hagler was the one landing the harder shots how did you see it ineffective ?
This is it. Fight was close. Could have gone either way. Went for the super-popular all american athlete. What a ****ing surprise.
I had Hagler winning easily, but I can see why SRL got the nod. But there is a reason why there wasn't a rematch, as Hagler was in the position to make the most adjustments. Hence, Hagler will always be a better middleweight to me than SRL.
Haven't watched the fight in ages... I think I'll watch it again soon. As far as I can remember I had SRL winning the first 5, but then Hagler caught up. It was all Hagler then, but the 12th was very close... let me put it this way, the fight was a draw if you give the 12th to SLR. If you have it even, Hagler wins by 1 point.
Yeah, probably because Leonard was a WW for most of his career and only went up to MW to face Hagler. You're such a tool.
Amazing fight - 21 years later it still arouses emotion. I covered the bout and scored it for Leonard - I was seduced by his story. It was a better story if he won and reporters tend to pull for the best story. The scoring system is subjective, and that opens up a window into personal bias. One of the judges who voted for Leonard, - Jo Jo Guerra - idolized Sugar Ray Robinson and in his youth sparred with Robinson. On an emotional level, Guerra was pre-disposed toward Leonard. The other judge who voted for Leonard, Dave Moretti, was planning a business enterprise with a local gambler, Billy Baxter, who bet a bundle on Leonard. Moretti was cleared of any criminal allegations by Nevada law enforcement, but on an emotional level, he must have been predisposed to Leonard. Leonard was Hollywood, Hagler was Main Street. People saw the winner as the guy with whom they identified. Leonard and Hagler gave us a 'marvelous' fight and something more - a mirror. I agree with referee Richard Steele, who told me, "every time I watch it, it gets closer".
My last lesson for you because we are on different levels. Of course he fought at a lower division, dumbass. But he did move up for Hagler and the rematch would have been an even bigger fight. But, SRL knew he was going to lose the rematch. Seriously, you struggle mightily in boxing and MMA. Try baseball or something.
Trying to change the subject again because you've made an ass of yourself, yet again, and still can't back up any bull**** claims you make. Leonard fought Hagler for a single fight at MW, it was beyond questioning that Hagler would still go down in history as the better MW, just not the better P4P fighter. If you had any knowledge you'd have known this. But what do I expect from the same mental midget that claimed Michael Moorer was the best LHW of all time?:rofl
